I've been asked by Tony and Bruce (doing ELP-related merchandising) to let you know that there are 2 polls currently going on. The polls are asking ELP fans to vote for which archival live audio and video you're most interested in. Rather than replicate the polls on yet another web site, I'll point to 2 ways to get to the polls and vote: If you're a member of the ELP-DISC (ELP Discussion) or want to join and become a member (it's free), you can get to the polls on the ELP-DISC area in Yahoo Groups: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ELP-DISC/ If you'd rather not join the Yahoo group, the people at "Ladies of the Lake" have also put the poll on their web site. Go to http://www.ladiesofthelake.net and scroll down about half way to the "Live Audio/Video Survey". Please limit your voting to one vote in each survey per person. It is not surprising that 'Three Chord Wonderland' and 'Ballad City' are saturated with the offerings of the tone deaf, the dull-witted and the uninspired lacking imagination. That's taken as read but the idea of anyone wanting to cover ELP, and even more so, the thought of anyone actually pulling it off? I was surprised (even bl**dy dumbfounded) to find out that there are indeed people out there of stature enough to grab a handful of Hammond, a modicum of Moog, the rattle of wood on skin, and the depth of a Lake. And what a deep little puddle this is. Alan (colleague from work) went all snotty at the thought of anyone having the audacity to attempt his favourite (Hoedown). Mick who pulls pints and has the encyclopaedic knowledge of career barmen and barbers curled a practiced sneer and reminded us of the lack of modular Moogs and Hammonds. Daniel (compulsive obsessive collector type with prog-rock short circuited brain) swore to deal with anyone who as much as lost a seventh or replaced a minor with a major. During a period of evening opening hours, we rode this to death, eventually agreeing that if you want guaranteed kosher ELP, you need the real thing. However, like virgin beluga, modular moogs and high morals in Blackpool during Glasgow Fair, ELP are thin on the ground. If we're happy enough to accept ELP flavoured entertainment (sort of like drinking Virgin Cola instead of Pepsi or Coke), and as long as we accept that it's a cola flavoured band we're drinking, not a bottle of Vintage Chateaux ELP, then it's OK. Which is good really as I'm getting to quite like some of these tribute bands. I'm still waiting for some output from the Seven Virgins mob but I've already borrowed (and enjoyed much) the Noddy's Puncture CD and Video. Today was then an excellent day. In among the bills, offers of cheaper balance transfer credit cards, and Kleeneezee catalogues was a present from the Brain Salad brigade in Cheshire. OK, it's not a commercial offering - more a sort of: 'Why don't we record this live stuff and see what it sounds like in the cold light of day on CD,' kind of thing. It has, Fanfare, Jerusalem, Old Castle/Blues Variation, Eruption and Hoedown. And if this is what happens live in Cheshire, someone should push these buggers into a studio sharpish and make them record a proper tribute album. It might not be a bottle of ELP but it's pretty damn good cola. The instruments (modern) do a good job of replicating some of those 70s analogue sounds. I was quite impressed and asked what they used. I was told: Keys: Korg BX3 , Nord Lead for lead synth lines, a Roland piano and a Korg X5D poly synth Drums: Gretsch kit, Gong and tubular bells. Guitars: Fender Jazz Bass, Fender Telecaster and Fylde Acoustic. Trace Elliot bass rig and a Peavey Bravo valve guitar amp I reckon that they're worth a look and a listen and, at last point of asking, they were looking out for gigs within travelling distance of Cheshire. Encouragement, demands for gigs and CDs should be aimed at ian.sherwood@tesco.net And after that long rant, I suppose there will be those who think tributes are great and those who will damn me to hell for having the audacity to mention them. Me, I'm in the middle. I want real glass of ELP but if I can't have it, I'm not going to stop drinking to prove a point (hic) --------------------------------------------- From: ds [phineas1_98@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, September 20, 2003 10:59 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: pictures of an exibitionist am reading "pictures of an exhibitionist" hilarious!!!!!! a definite must read!!!! deborah steele phineas1_98@yahoo.com --------------------------------------------- From: Burke, Edward J Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2003 11:42 AM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Carl Palmer US Drum Clinic Hi John, I wanted to tell you that I had a fantastic time on 21 September 2003 at the drum clinic that Carl Palmer gave at the Sam Ash music store in King of Prussia, PA. Dreams do come true I guess!! Thanks to the article in ELP Digest Vol 13 No 8, I became aware that the drum clinic was occurring, and King of Prussia was only about one hour drive!! I asked my two boys, ages 14 and 11, if they wanted to go too, and they did, so I got three tickets. Carl was giving the clinic with Danny Carey, the drummer from Tool. I had never heard of Tool before, nor Danny Carey. The Sam Ash folks I spoke to on the phone said the clinic, being held inside the store itself, would hold about 600-700 people, and that it was general admission seating, first come, best seats. We got to the store at about 3:00 pm for a 6:30 pm advertised start. Most of the crowd, about 90%, were Tool fans, some I spoke to coming from as far away as Indiana to attend this Philadelphia area clinic. Almost none of the 15-25 year olds I spoke with knew who Carl Palmer was, so I had to hold a CP/ELP class outside the store while waiting. I was pulling out Carl Palmer pictures, album covers, etc, letting them know they were in for a real treat when Carl performs. My two boys and I were about 21st, 22nd and 23rd in line out of about 600 folks by the time 6:30 rolled around, and we got front row seats about 12 feet from Carl's drum kit. I sat next to [... a guy ...] from Pilato Entertainment, a very nice fellow named Tony. Awesome!! [Editor's Note: the author misunderstood Tony's role so I've corrected it at the request of Tony. He's actually helping with a possible ELP DVD. - John - ] Danny Carey went on first. He's new at the whole clinic thing and seemed a bit nervous. He spoke kindly about his bandmates and the things that inspired him, and seemed like a pretty nice guy. He did a few drum "solos", but he had the rest of Tool's music playing as well via recorded vocals, keyboards, and guitar while he played the live drums. He was OK, and, of course, the 90% crowd went wild for him as he banged out the solos. At the end of his segment he mentioned that Carl Palmer was one of those that inspired him, and that he used to play the Tarkus album all the time. Then, the Man of the Hour was introduced. Carl came out sharply dressed, and looking great. He spoke to the crowd and shared some humorous ELP and drum kit stories, answered alot of questions from the audience, demonstrated techniques with the sticks, and practice methods. He did some demonstrations on a snare drum. He did a snare drum solo, a one handed drum roll and some stick tricks that had the Tool crowd oooohing and aaaahing. It was great to see them reacting to this master drummer that they had never heard of before. I was in heaven just being able to see Carl again. I last saw ELP in 1978, and Greg with Ringo in 2001. Carl demonstrated a technique to increase speed that was amazing, inserting bursts of maximum speed with the sticks amongst normal comfortable playing, slowly trying to lengthen the duration of the bursts. Amazing stuff. Carl continued with a high hat demo, doing a terrific solo on it that sounded great, hitting the instrument with the sticks from above, below, and sideways with both ends of the sticks! The Toolheads were looking at each other, like "Who is this guy?" Tony from Pilato and I were laughing!! Carl's drum kit was the Paiste solid bronze set, each piece machined from a single piece of stock, no welds. A beautiful drum kit. Carl did some demos on it, and finished up with a terrific drum solo, tossing sticks in the air and all. I didn't want it to end! After the clinic ended about 10:30 pm or so, Carl and friends packed up his kit, then he was available for autographs. The boys and I got three color pictures that I had printed off of his website signed by Carl. Outside in the car, I had brought my old denim jacket that had an acrylic painting of the Tarkus album cover on it, done by a good friend of mine back in 1979. I got the jacket out of the car, and headed back into the store. I got in the autograph line again, and when I got up front, I plopped the jacket down on the table in front of Carl, and asked him if he would sign it. He thought the jacket was very cool, asked me if I painted it, said it was very well preserved for being 24 years old, and he signed it for me!! I shook his hand, and told him thanks for everything. I was in heaven!! I am attaching two jpeg pictures for you. One is of Carl working his drum kit at the King of Prussia clinic, and the other is of my signed Tarkus jacket. Would it be possible for you to share these pictures with fellow ELP Digest on the website? If you know of any way that I could try to get Keith and Greg's signatures on the Tarkus jacket, I would really appreciate it. It would be a life goal to do so! Thanks for all you do for all of us ELP fans. We'd be wandering around aimlessly without you!! I had that disc too. I'm sure it was lifted from the Cal Jam gig. some of which ended up on Now And Then. The tracks (all poorly recorded) were linked by funny outakes from Star Trek and it ended with a bad copy of the BSS floppy freebie from the UK's NME . I think the band definately released the best of the bootlegs. I have a great session recorded for French radio in 1973 other than that i've heard of a boot called Hoedown which is the ill fated Japan 72' gigs. One listen to his speaking voice will attest to this. He never really go up into the high tenor range (think Robert Plant here). But the top end of his voice has definitely diminished over the years. It's not just age and lax technique; fags aplenty (cigarettes to us American types) had a role, I'm pretty sure. These three things affect different people in different ways. One interesting note (so to speak): I've seen footage from ELP's performance in Poland (Hungary? someplace in Eastern Europe) on [ahem] less-than-official video. As you might have heard on the Then & Now CD, Greg sounded *worlds* better in 1998 than in 1993 (circa Black Moon). Maybe he quit smoking. More importantly, IMHO, is that in '98 he was using in-ear monitors and running most of his bass signal through the P.A. On the Black Moon tour, he used traditional wedge monitors and a huge stack of amps with almost no bass signal in the P.A. (I can remember reading/seeing diagrams of his setups at both times in Guitar or Bass Player Magazine.) I speak from experience: in-ear monitors and lower over-all stage volume make a world of difference. In answer to your question of whether anyone still possesses a copy of the ELP vinyl boot of Callow Crash and Idle Eyes, I still have a copy lingering about in my vinyl collection. It is on The Amazing Kornyphone Record Label,(Takrl 1911) and is a rather skeletal tape-copy of the Welcome Back My Friends live LP, although the actual source was probably the King Biscuit Flower Hour. It includes a 25-minute version of Karnevil 9 with the drum solo edited out. In terms of the recent ELP Bootleg Series on Sanctuary Records, Box#3,CD-1 contains a few songs that were on the Callow Crash boot, but since they are thrown willy-nilly in with a swath of other, unrelated tracks from Wheeling 1977,at the end of the day, who knows from where the folks at Sanctuary got their sources. I hope this helps.
