I hope you all are enjoying the season and Keith's Christmas album, whichever version you have. I miss the original cover and artwork. The stocking hung on the Moog was truly a perfect yuletide classic. If this were an ELP album I'd rate it right in the middle, towards the high end. I think it makes a great Christmas present, because everybody I know who hates ELP always says "who is that" and when I tell them it's Emerson they look crestfallen because they love the Christmas music, but are used to hating ELP. I thought I would pass along my tribute to BSS. When I was in high school, one term of my English class was devoted to science fiction and fantasy. Seeing as I had more important things to do with my life than attend English class, I was in deep trouble when it came to the final exams! My English teacher made the mistake, er, I mean wise decision, to let the students decide what to do for an exam. The only thing I had in my possession that was remotely science fiction, was my well worn, latest copy of BSS. I proceeded to do a highly intellectual review of Karnevil Part 3, with my copy of BSS for the teacher to follow along. I also then proceeded to explain all the incredible synthesized sounds for extra credit. Although I have always been a huge fan of ELP, I know absolutely nothing about the technical end of Keith's music, so I completely made it all up! However, my teacher knew even less and when my final exam was returned to me, on the top of the page was an A++. My teacher thought it was the best album he had heard in ages and thanks to ELP, I actually managed to get my high school diploma. I've been backstage at a number of ELP shows since those days, and I actually kept the first page of my paper and showed it off to them. Undoubtedly BSS was one of the most innovative and impressive albums of all time. I still think the synthesized discussion between man and machine would make Jules Verne jealous (see, I did read a book!) and well worthy of an A++. Now that I am a respectable member of society, I would ask you all not to tell my teacher or they may revoke my diploma!! BSS is the one that all fans seem to rave about, but, with the exception of Toccata, the album did little for me compared to Trilogy, and more particularly the first eponymous album. Emerson, Lake & Palmer was the album that changed the musical map of the world for me, and of that particularly The Three Fates. It suggested a template for a musical direction they might follow up, but they only half followed it up, and half departed from that template into something a little different. Beyond the obvious Holy Grail California Jam footage we've all waited (some of us over a quarter century!) to see with other than the C-/D+ picture quality of the bootleg material...how about this for sheer fantasy: ABC digs through its vaults and not only discovers the quadruplex 2" videotapes...but the original 2" tapes from which they edited the broadcast footage, to encompass ELP's entire Cal Jam set (presumably Hoedown, Tarkus, ALL of the KE9 suite, etc ). Before glancing around to see Rod Serling standing in a corner of the room (!), it's not completely in the realm of fantasy. I believe it's entirely plausible that such tapes still exist. Hope springs eternal, right? Back to the known realm! Assuming we at least get the broadcast footage cited above, there is also the '97 Poland concert. This was shot on videotape too (same show that's on CD). There is bootleg footage of this one circulating as well, but it's only about half of the performance (evidently edited for broadcast). Excellent camera work! I am privileged, not only to have seen ELP twice during 1977, but also to have been stationed in Germany during 1997...I saw The Boys in Kassel, Germany, a mere six days after the Poland concert. That CD is quite a souvenir for me! Unless there's any other videotape from the '74 BSS Tour or the '77 Works Tour, the only other footage I can think of would be the 1972 film shot in Milan (?), amply documenting that era. Of course, detouring back into the Twilight Zone, maybe pristine footage from the 1970 Lyceum concert, sans Captain Marvel/The Hulk plastered over the show! When John sent out the last edition of the ELP Digest, just before Christmas and mentioned a new version of the afore mentioned Greg Lake tune, I went to Greg's website, listened, and melted. I can't wait to hear the rest of the tune. Does anyone know where it is available in its entirety? Only criticism is, I wish Greg would change those lyrics, so it doesn't sound atheistic. It confuses me, as Greg does, because in the Emerson, Lake and Palmer book, Greg announces that the negative side of the song is Pete Sinfield's, and that Christmas was his favorite time of the year as a child, and still is because of his own child. How can an atheist celebrate Christmas, when it is the celebration of the birth of God come to earth in the flesh? I wish someone would clear this up for me. Is Greg Lake an atheist or not? Sincerely, Steve Barber --------------------------------------------- From: Prott, Bernd [bernd.prott@meadsintl.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 13, 2004 3:43 AM To: 'elp-digest@reluctant.com' Subject: A matter of fairness Hello fellow ELP friends, for quite some time and Digest issues, Greg Lake has been the target of various forms of bashing, wether it is his singing, his bass playing or his personal attitude towards ELP. I must confess that I am not an explicit Lake fan but I think this kind of bashing is not fair and should stop. IMHO it really reduces the value to read the digest. I can understand that some people are somehow frustrated that ELP is history and most likely will be for good. But this frustration should not lead to unfair bashing of Greg, just because he was the one to call it the day. Maybe someday it will turn out to be the best thing he did for ELP, but we cannot say that right now. ELP is one of those bands that are based on the magic of synergy, no solo effort of each member ever came close to the power of the classic ELP albums. It might be the case that the 3 don't really like each other personally, but as a musical team they were second to none. Greg might not be the greatest composer or producer or singer or bass player or what so ever, but so what he left a definite trademark on ELP. Greg is as much ELP as the other 2. As a matter of fairness and respect at least I can wholeheartly say THANK YOU Greg for your contribution to the ELP magic - it's a fact. I cannot understand the intentions of those Greg bashers, do you believe you can force him back into ELP by provocating him? IMHO he could not care less about those statements. I sometimes get the feeling that way too many people still see ELP through "Pink Glasses" as we say in Germany. Even if they would come back, I personnally doubt that they will be as good as we all would want them to be. When I listen to the latest Emerson/Nice release, I cannot believe that this man can perform the true ELP magic of the early 70ies. One major Keyboard magazine, which has been faithful and fair with Keith over almost 30 years brought it to a simple point, "a lousy performance". IMHO it is sad but true. So should we start now to bash Keith - my suggestion Absolutely NOT. Let us simply accept that the show that never ends has run out of steam. Sometimes I have the feeling that the ELP legacy becomes more and more a burden for especially Keith and Greg. We can cut down this burden by accepting our heroes the way they are today. They have given us so many great moments in 30 years, I think, there is no need that they put their reputation at stake trying to repeat an unrepeatable history. Read below for a reader who has just obtained this DVD. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: Dave Gonigam [mailto:Dave.Gonigam@comcast.net] Sent: Thursday, January 29, 2004 5:40 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: ELPowell writing credits John: Been thoroughly enjoying the two ELPowell "official bootlegs" -- I longed for such a release, and never thought it would come about. But I noticed a change made in the songwriting credits. On the original ELPowell album, the lyrics were attributed solely to Greg and the music solely to Keith. But on the two new issues, the music for the same pieces is attributed to both Keith and Greg. Admittedly, songwriting credits are a rather arbitrary thing for many bands, but the change still strikes me as curious. Anyone know the story here? --------------------------------------------- From: Stephane Scherer [mailto:sscherer@iprolink.ch] Sent: Sunday, February 01, 2004 4:40 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: ELPowell Live in Concert CD Hello, I just have some questions regarding the new ELPowell Live in Concert CD after having listened to it: 1) is this the complete gig, and if not, why has some of it been edited? 2) why have the between songs been edited? 3) being an official bootleg, don't you think there is absolutely no problem to issue the full gig (or at least what is available on tape) even if some of it is not of top quality ? many thanks in advance for your answers and best regards Stephane from Geneva, Switzerland --------------------------------------------- From: neil wood [mailto:neil.woody@ntlworld.com] Sent: Sunday, February 01, 2004 6:30 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: new elp dvd!!!!!
