It's a great day to celebrate Keith's birthday (and, this year, he's on tour to celebrate) and the anniversary of the first edition of the ELP Digest (way back in 1991)! The first reviews of the Keith Emerson Band tour and photos are starting to come in. Read about the details in this Digest. And breaking news says that Keith will appear on the syndicated 'Rockline' radio interview show next Wednesday (November 10). Also, there is news of an upcoming performance by the Carl Palmer Band in the UK. And, Bjorn-Are (who, I swear must 'google' for ELP nuggets every day) has found a reference indicating that Keith may have done the soundtrack for the final Godzilla movie that's due out soon. A number of readers have spotted mention of new ELP DVDS. However, these are NOT the DVD project that has been mentioned as a band-involved project. More details below. All this and more (as usual). Enjoy! - John - P.S. And, for those of you who are baseball fans, I couldn't help but notice that the 'Welcome Back...' part of Karn Evil 9 that I heard played prior to a Red Sox game earlier this summer was also played prior to once of the Red Sox/Yankees playoff games. (You could just hear it being played in the stadium while the Fox announcers did their intro to the game.) --------------------------------------------- Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... The full details should be posted to the KeithEmerson.com web site in the near future with all the details but here's a quick synopsis of the info I've received about it so far: "November 10th, Keith Emerson appears live on renowned syndicated interview show Rockline, following his appearance in Houston. Keith will make his way to Houston's rockline studios for an hour and a half of chat and music following the band's set. The show is slated to begin at 8.30 pm Pacific Time, US and go to 11pm PT. Fans have the opportunity to call in and ask Keith questions about his music and his career. PLEASE NOTE THE TIME ZONE!!!!! This is a LIVE broadcast!" More details are available here: http://www.themickjaggercentre.com/event_details.php?event_id=12 Here's a snippet from the site, "Enjoy an evening with a compelling showman, who thrills audiences by his lightning speed and mastery of drumming techniques. Not to be missed!" is accompanied by the quote "the drummers' drummer" from the Times. I remember from the flyer the mention of new material as well as ELP tracks. For those who don't know, the Mick Jagger centre is in the grounds of Dartford Grammar School for Boys, where Mick Jagger used to attend. The school wasn't about to let this pass without getting something out of it, so they named the new music venue/teaching block after him and got him to open it! And thus, the centre was born (a few years ago now). From what I've heard, it's very impressive (for a school) but quite cosy, so grab your tickets soon if you want a seat! I hope this information is helpful to someone. 'Inside ELP 1970 - 1995' is, at is says on the cover 'an independent critical review' of ELP and their albums. Unlike all of the UK produced prog rock TV documentaries, nearly everything that is said on this DVD is positve. There are seven 'critics', and for nearly all tracks which are discussed there are live video clips which will be familiar to ELP fans, although I'm certain I saw a brief clip from the unreleased part of the 'Pictures' Lyceum video. Running time shows on the cover as 60 minutes, and 'Tarkus' isn't mentioned until 20 minutes in. I was looking at the clock towards the end of the DVD and wondering how the later albums would be squeezed in, but even though the running time is 63.5 minutes there is no mention of 'In The Hot Seat'. Thanks John for all you've done to keep the digest going all these years. It's greatly appreciated. Stop reading if you don't want to know *** ] Dear John, Just got back from seeing Emerson and the lads at the local arena. (Never mind Tesla & the Scorpions ...) Thought you might want to include this review in a future Digest. Rick Krueger SETLIST: Hoedown -- the familiar Moog opening rang out like an old friend coming home. Great Hammond work from Keith -- and he's definitely got a band that can keep up with him!! An exhilarating opener. Living Sin (from Trilogy) -- never thought I would hear this live! Kilminster sings the lead vocal and does a creditable job. Slinky and powerful. Bitches' Crystal -- well done throughout; Emo plays the verses on Hammond, doing the instrumental bits on synthesized piano and MIDIed Korg organ. Kilminster on vocals again. The corny piano ending brings the house down. Tarkus -- "Sing along with this one if you like ... it's a love song, really ..." The Eruption riff goes on for awhile longer than usual (monitor problems, I think). Again, this band has drive -- providing a real powerhouse opening. Stones of Years features Kilminster on vocal and another great Hammond solo. Iconoclast is mostly done on synth. Mass is entirely instrumental; the drum break between Mass and Manticore turns into a very cool drum solo by Riley. Battlefield is done as a duet between Emo and Kilminster (on acoustic guitar and vocals). Dave even does Lake's old King Crimson quote (from Epitaph) at the end, just like on the 1974 live album. The modular Moog roars to life on Aquatarkus, driving the whole thing to a stunning end. Fanfare for the Common Man -- more of a dance groove (like the Re-Works dance mix) than the original shuffle. Keith does some Hammond slapping, then plays the Bach Toccata and Fugue in D Minor upside down on the synth (appropriate for Halloween, no?) Dave chimes in with some flashy stuff as well (though I don't think he did Sabre Dance tonight). As the whole thing ends, the synth riff that ends the Brain Salad Surgery album starts cycling, going faster and faster as the boys take their bows. All in all, a fun forty minutes fun. For a guy who's turning 60, Emo can still kick! BTW, they had a pretty full range of merch: -Copies of Emo's book in paperback ($20) -the Live in Glasgow with the Nice CD ($30 autographed) -baseball cap (stylised "E" on front, "Emerson" on the back, $30) -t-shirt (Emo photo from the 92-93 ELP tour on front, band logo on back, $35) -long-sleeved shirt (same design as above with stylised "Es" running down the left sleeve, $40) =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: Steve Brant Sent: Monday, October 04, 2004 1:12 PM To: elp-digest Subject: RE: Remembering Scott Muni... > From: John Arnold > Sent: Friday, October 01, 2004 1:35 PM > To: elp-digest@reluctant.com > Subject: Remembering Scott Muni... > > Hi. > > I heard that Scott Muni died earlier this week. It's been interesting reading Keith's autobiography, and the ELP biography, and then cross checking the contentious details with Digest contributions. NOW I'm confused... Secondly, an odd tidbit for Australian fans: I recently saw Shenzo's Electric Stunt Orchestra performing in, or should I say above, the central escalator lobby of a shopping mall in Cairns. This four piece band of lunatics includes a drummer, guitarist, bassist, and Shenzo the virtuoso violinist. While the drummer remains earthbound in this venue, the other three take to the air in trapeze harnesses, flying up to ten metres in height and swinging and spinning around on near-collision courses whilst thrashing out a heavy metal mix of classical, rock and pop. They start with Bach's "Toccata", then segue to the James Bond theme played simultaneously with "Nutcracker Suite" (it actually fits), and proceed to levitate everything from Kiss to the Charlie Daniels Band, at ear-splitting volume. The highlight of this show was Shenzo's death-defying leap across the void, playing ELP's arrangement of "Fanfare". Keith's distinctive GX1 chords were mimicked quite well on the violin, and I couldn't help but wonder if the whole concept had maybe been inspired by Keith's spinning piano antics! Progressive rock, or PROG as it is called today, had its early beginning with the music of the BEATLES, perhaps the most important group in all of rock history. Albums such as Abbey Road, The White Album, and even Sgt. Pepper & His Lonely Hearts Club Band utilized the techniques that would later be used by the giants of the PROG movement; bands such as Genesis, YES, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull & Pink Floyd all openly pay tribute to the genius that was the BEATLES. Peel, who discovered dozens of major bands during 40 years as a radio disc jockey, suffered a heart attack Monday night in the ancient Inca city of Cuzco, the BBC said. Peel, 65, was on holiday with his wife, Sheila. "John Peel was a broadcasting legend. I am deeply saddened by his death as are all who work at Radio 1," said BBC spokesman Andy Parfitt. "John's influence has towered over the development of popular music for nearly four decades. He will be hugely missed." Born John Ravenscroft near Liverpool in 1939, Peel said his life was changed when he was a teenager by hearing Elvis Presley singing "Heartbreak Hotel." He moved to Dallas, Texas, where he landed a job as a DJ on WRR radio. Returning to the UK, Peel became one of the country's first pirate DJs, who broadcast from ships outside British waters in the 1960s. He joined the BBC in 1967, becoming the longest-serving DJ on BBC Radio 1. Peel was among the first DJs to play demo tapes by little-known bands -- championing acts ranging from Jimi Hendrix to The Smiths, The Fall, Pulp and Northern Irish punks The Undertones. He was a strong supporter of punk rock in the late 1970s, as well as reggae music. He also promoted hip-hop. Since 1998, he hosted Radio 4's "Home Truths" program, a whimsical show about the travails of family life. Peel is survived by his wife and four children." --------------------------------------------- From: Roger Evans Sent: Friday, October 29, 2004 1:59 PM To: elp-digest Subject: John Peel Hi John, I just wanted to note the sad passing of BBC Radio 1 veteran DJ John Peel at the age of 65 this week. Since 1967 John Peel has been at the forefront of promoting new and upcoming bands including the Nice for whom he did a promotional voice-over on a flexi-disk sampler of the Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack (which I think was given away free with either Melody Maker or New Musical Express). This sampler is featured on the Here Comes the Nice anthology (Track 3 CD 1) and parts of it were used as the opener on the Nice comeback tour in 2002. John wasn't so keen on ELP, calling them "a waste of talent and electricity". Despite this opinion he is regarded as being the single most important person in British music over the last 30 years. Without his steadfast promotion of new bands the music scene would be a very dull place indeed. He will be sorely missed.
