And, today, it's Greg's turn. Happy Birthday, Greg! In this Digest, Bruce Pilato updates us on what Greg's been up to. There's a lot of activity to report and that's always good news. Also, North American readers may want to remember that Keith Emerson will be on the syndicated Rockline radio show TONIGHT! The full details (including a pretty complete (I think) listing of FM radio stations that carry Rockline can be found at Keith's web site: www.keithemerson.com. I also happened to notice recently that a number of ELP albums have been added to the iTunes service. A few people had asked about this in the past year so it's nice to see it become available in this new format. An ELP Digest reader has graciously translated the Japanese language web page that - in the last issue - referred to Keith's involvement with the music in the upcoming 'final' Godzilla movie. Also, we have a reader reporting on details of a new DVD that critiques (and, apparently a fair critique at that!) a lot of the ELP back catalog. And another ELP reference in modern literature. See the show! - John - P.S. Don't forget that Dave Kilminster, Phil Williams, and Pete Riley (from The Keith Emerson Band) are contributing text and photos to a web log that I'm hosting at www.brain-salad.com and that there's a more complete tour diary at www.davekilminster.com. ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... Details to follow soon at the official Greg Lake website. Look for a major update to the official Greg Lake website in the next 30 days, including an extensive Online Greg Lake Museum with over 400 rare items and artifacts. Greg continues to finish production on a forthcoming collection of new recordings of his greatest songs, as well as several new songs. The disc will be released in 2005 and will be a surround sound production. More details on this and other projects, will be forthcoming later this year. Greg will appear in the upcoming BBC-TV/ Granada Television holiday TV special: THE 100 GREATEST CHRISTMAS MOMENTS which will air on Christmas Day in the UK. Greg is the featured cover story this month on 20th CENTURY GUITAR magazine. Fans can also see extensive recent feature stories on Greg Lake in Goldmine (Oct 2004); Bass Guitar Magazine; and MOJO Magazine (Dec 2004). This and many more exciting developments will all be developed in detail in the coming weeks at www.greglake.com Thanks Bruce P." Thanks for the update, Bruce! We appreciate it. --------------------------------------------- From: Steve Peterka Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 11:27 AM To: ELP Digest Subject: Re: ELP Digest Vol. 14 #08 Hi, John Re. Keith scoring Godzilla Final Wars... Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0399102/fullcredits lists him as composer. Also, there are some clips at http://tokyomonsters.com/videos-trailers-2004-FinalWars.php No credits, but the TV Promo 1 and 2 have background music that could be Keith's work, and the GFW background music ("Redrum" - Immediate Music") sounds very much like Keith. Great news - I'm a fan of Keith's movie work, especially Nighthawks, and the Iron Man theme. Saturday, 30th October 2004 The soundtrack to the upcoming "Godzilla: Final Wars", composed by the British-born Keith Emerson, is set to go on sale on December 16th, just in time for Christmas. However, perhaps of greater interest is that the soundtrack will be released on two different formats; not only the standard compact disc, but also a 5.1 surround channel DVD-Audio disc. The CD will be released at 2,520 Yen (approximately $25 US dollars) and the DVD-Audio disc at 5,250 Yen (approx. $50). Whether or not the DVD version will include any extras (for example, a trailer) isn't know yet. Both the CD and DVD versions are available for per-order on Amazon Japan now. --------------------------------------------- From: John Arnold Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 9:31 PM To: elp-digest Subject: ELP added to iTunes! Hi. I just got today's email for Apple's iTunes 'New Music Tuesday' and listed first in the 'Just Added' section is Emerson, Lake & Palmer with a nice little thumbnail image of Brain Salad Surgery. Upon further investigation, it looks like the following albums became available on iTunes in October. (Full albums sell for $9.99 or so with an individual song download price of approx 99 cents each.) Albums available: Brain Salad Surgery Pictures at an Exhibition Welcome Back My Friends ... (live album) Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1st album) Works, Vol. 2 Live at Royal Albert Hall Love Beach Best of Emerson, Lake & Palmer Trilogy Tarkus Works Live I Believe in Father Christmas (EP) Black Moon Not sure why some albums aren't listed (e.g., Works, Vol. 1 or In the Hot Seat) but I couldn't find the complete catalog. I know some people have asked about the availability of ELP on iTunes and I was pleasantly surprised to see it publicized in the iTunes mailing. Now, if they'd just make an ELP TV ad for the iPod to go along with the U2 ad they've been showing recently. (Yes, I know I'm dreaming.) - John - =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: Michael E. Brassard Sent: Monday, November 01, 2004 7:00 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Keith Emerson in Portland Oregon 10-23-04 I just wanted to send a brief review of Keith's appearance in 'sunny' Portland Oregon. He did a brief acoustic concert and some readings from his new book in a music store called Music Millenium on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 2:30 PM. There were probably 100 or so people in attendance. Keith played the whole of Tarkus on a small spinet piano accompanied by Dave Kilminster on acoustic guitar. Dave played the melodies on the guitar and no one sang. It was a very interesting version, and Keith and Dave seemed to truly enjoy playing. He read several passages from his new book and then played Honky Tonk Train Blues. Afterwards he did a book and whatever signing. That night, Keith and his band played at the Colliseum, opening for Tesla and the Scorpions. It was $35.00 to get into the show. Keith strode onto the stage wearing the exact same clothes he wore at Music Millenium that afternoon. Dave, on the other hand, seemed to find time to change before the show. The band started the show with Hoedown and did some other things. The main problem with the show was that Keith seemed to be so totally un-involved, he could have phoned his performance in. I can't tell you how many times he wasn't doing anything with his left hand - and I thought that Keith was not just another one-handed rock player! Another problem was how many times he and Dave looked at their watches. What do they have managers for? He should have been concentrating on playing - not watching the clock. In conclusion, I feel the Keith Emerson Band did a lounge act sort of nostalgia thing, but without the enthusiasm of some of the better tribute bands. Finally, it would have been nice if the band had played at least one of Keith's newer works. The crowd was much more enthusiastic than I expected - this was, after all, more of an arena hard rock, guitar oriented show, and Keith was the only keyboard player on the whole bill (except for some taped/sequenced stuff by the Scorpions). I felt I had to justify the $35.00 ticket price by hanging around to watch Tesla and the Scorpions. Neither one of these bands has anyone with musical talent approaching that of Keith Emerson and the people in his band, but they made up for it with enthusiasm and a genuine desire to establish a rapport with the audience. If Keith didn't want to play, he shouldn't have done the show. This type of concert only tarnishes his reputation. I have seen the Nice in 69 at the Boston Tea Party, ELP at the Charles River Esplanade for a free concert when ELP first came to the USA, ELP a bunch of other times, and Three at The Paradise in Boston. This is the lamest thing I have ever seen him do and I hope that he can be more productive and enthusiastic in the future. ------------------------------ From: phil Sent: Saturday, November 06, 2004 6:12 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Novel quotation In "Gazumped!", a humorous novel about thrity-somethings by Sarah O'Brien (pub. in UK by Coronet), the following appears on P.18: "What are you calling him?", I asked. "Not sure yet, but I'll be picking the name - no offence, India, but you Burkes have strange taste in names." We all laughed. As well as India, and Ruth's new husband, Emerson, there were three Burkes sisters - Isis, Saffron and Venus - and two brothers - Lake and Palmer. This was particularly distressing as I am a diehard Red Sox fan and this year was, to say the least, very special. In any case, I managed to get to two games this summer: one at Petco Park in San Diego and the other being Game 1 of the World Series at Fenway Park (that kind of made up for the fact that I hadn't been there all season). I was happy to hear that "Welcome Back..." is embraced by the fans on both coasts! On another baseball note... I saw GL performing with Ringo's band at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT in 2002. While Greg put on a great show, the most memorable moment was Ian Hunter's reliance on some bad geographical information. In terms of baseball loyalties, the Connecticut River is the dividing line. For the most part, those living to the west of the river tend to be Yankee fans and those living to the east are Red Sox fans. The Red Sox fanaticism becomes more pronounced as you approach the Rhode Island border. Uncasville is very close to Rhode Island. Anyway, in attempting to add local flavor to "Cleveland Rocks" Ian inserted the lyrics "Red Sox suck! Yankees Rock!" To the surprise of Ian and the rest of the band, they were greeted with a chorus of boos. They stopped for a second, looked at each other and then started playing again. Hopefully Ian will get better intelligence the next time he tries adding lyrics. --------------------------------------------- From: John Arnold Date: Nov 09 2004 Subject: Translation of 'Godzilla' web site Hi. One of our fellow ELP Digest readers has made an attempt to translate the Japanese language Godzilla page that mention's Keith Emerson's involvement with the upcoming Godzilla movie. I don't know Japanese so I can't vouch for total correctness but it's from a trusted source. Enjoy! - John - ========= Godzilla inducted for Hollywood Walk of Fame from: http://www.toho.co.jp/movienews/0410/06godzilla_wf.html On 10/20, the press conference was held in Toho headquarters in Tokyo to celebrate Godzilla's accomplishment and to talk about "Godzilla the Final War." Question: Where are you at the production of Godzilla the Final War? Editing is done, and we are dabbing at this time. The film is 2 hours 5 minutes long. Four shooting teams were at work, and many staff and cast participated. The ending roll alone is over 4 minutes long. "Highlight every 10 minutes" is the well-used advertising phrase. But we assure you that there is a highlight every 10 seconds in this film! There are over 2800 cuts in the entire film, and digital processing will be done on the 1000 cuts. The post-production team (trans. - I believe that is what it means - Japanese shortens any words at their will!) has been working very hard. As far as the sounds go, the similar efforts are necessary. We are aiming Nov. 15 as the completion date. The world premier at the Chinese Theatre will be on Nov. 29, the same day as the Walk of Fame ceremony. Many wonderful talents are gathered for sound and image. Keith Emerson, the influential figure in the 70s, is in charge of music. We chose him based on his charisma and his extensive experience in movie scores. His age is close to that of Godzilla. We feel very fortunate that he did take up the task in his busy schedule. As for a song used in the movie, SUM41, very popular among the young people, has accepted to provide the sound track. SUM41 created the music for this movie, and the album that includes this song is doing very well. We are very fortunate that the young SUM41 and the influential Keith Emerson joined in this film. Kyle Cooper is in charge of the main title. It is scheduled to be completed in 10 days. We saw the rough, which superbly condensed the 50-year history of the series into 100 seconds. We are certain that you will be impressed too. Keith is the British, SSUM41 is the Canadian, and Kyle is the American. Our aim - "All-star film of the world" - is realized even in the staff size. Let us tell you about the events on Nov. 29. Walk of Fame ceremony will be held on Hollywood Blvd at noon. Godzilla will land on the US soil officially for the first time. He is not going there to destroy but to shake hands. So I have to be careful that he will not be out of control and destroy things! World Premier will be held that night at Chinese Theatre. The theatre is very historical and has the capacity of 1000 people. We are looking forward to finding out how many Americans will enjoy this film. We have been telling the director Kitamura to bear this hard work to see that day! As you understand now, the completion of the film will be so close to the premier. And we are afraid that you may not be able to "feel" the entire movie now. But we believe that we will be able to offer you the 7-minute promotional film next week. We are confident that the promotional film will tell you how spectacular this film will be. Please see the promotional film - you should feel various emotional and sentimental feelings. (The promotional film was shown on Oct. 28 - trans.) We are confident that the film will be loved by all - children and parents who watch Godzilla every year, old fans who enjoyed Godzilla movies long time ago, and people who have never watched Godzilla but exclusively watch Hollywood movies. Question: Do you use classical Godzilla music? We contacted Mr. Ifukube, the composer of the original Godzilla theme music, and consulted him extensively. We gained the approval from Mr. Ifukube. You will have to wait for the movie to find how his music is used! He is not the controlling figure, and we believe that he granted us to work with his music at our liberty. Question: How do you feel that you could gather the charisma in many fields from many countries? The film is the All-Star film in the world, so we believe that staff is among the all-star team. (Godzilla the Final War official site can be seen in English -- http://www.godzilla.co.jp/index.html and hit "English" at the upper right corner.
