And, there was a significant impact of ELP on cell phone advertising this Christmas in Canada. - John - --------------------------------------------- Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... The official ELP site has a link to the new Montreaux DVD at: http://www.emersonlakepalmer.com/elp2.html There was a 'seasonal fun' front page up temporarily on KeithEmerson.com. However, it has been taken down early out of respect for those involved in the tragic tsunamis, etc. After a suitable period has passed, it will be re-posted for those of you who missed it. Also, there are many new items in the KeithEmerson.com store including Tarkus medallions, t-shirts, and caps. Check it out at: http://www.keithemerson.com/News/whatsnew.html There's a special holiday greeting on Greg's site and also a link to news about a national television appearance in the UK on Christmas Eve! Björnsson Sent: Sunday, November 21, 2004 5:23 PM To: elp-digest-request Recently I attended a show by Carl Palmer band in Dartford UK. In short, it was a great two hour gig and it is obvious that Carl is doing all he can to keep in form, and he is doing it very well. A link to an earlier show can be found here: http://www.hairlessheartherald.co.uk/cpb0504.htm The performance of the whole band was unbelievable, it was not ELP though. Some of the ELP songs sounded at least as good as the ELP versions. I urge every real ELP fan to take a look at Carl Palmer Working Live CD's, if you ever liked Hoedown, Trilogy, Fanfare For The Common Man etc. go for it. Also I suggest that you attend at least one show with his band. Next year is ELP's 35th anniversary. As an ELP fan I have no bigger dream than ELP will one more time be back, that would rejoice most ELP fans. No one could expect the same power as ELP showed in the eighties, but at least Keith and Carl are now touring and should be ready for it. I am sure that Greg has not forgotten everything that he knew, so what is needed to bring them together ? Who has got the answer ? It is time that we get it, we are running out of time, I am sure it won't happen when Keith gets 70. Hi John It's not often that those of us who live in the Highlands of Scotland get the chance to see major artists perform live - well not without travelling hundreds of miles anyway. So it was with some amazement that I noted the Carl Palmer Band were scheduled to perform at the Invershin House (www.invershin.com), about 40 miles further north than Inverness, on the 18th November. A quick phone call confirmed the gig, and the ticket was booked on the spot. The actual gig was performed in Carbisdale Castle (www.carbisdale.org) which is now also a youth hostel. but with a difference! A bar was present, and serving at pub prices, and the hall for the gig was warm and cosy. Turnout was probably far less than CP was used to, and I guess fairly disappointing at perhaps circa 100 fans of all ages from 5'ish to 70+, but the venue is pretty remote in one of the sparsest populated regions of the UK, and not that easy to get to. But those of us that made the journey that bitterly cold night were treated to a fantastic performance by the guys, who work fabulously together as a tight-knit band, and the level of intimacy afforded by the setting was fantastic. Paul's guitar playing was a revelation and put a completely viable new slant to the re-worked ELP classics played. Dave's bass playing and feel for the music was wonderful - despite one of his bass guitars giving up the ghost - and his "whale song" piece was truly amazing. And Carl was stunning, turning in a simply fabulous performance to delight those of us who had never seen in person the great man do what he does best - perform prog rock! A true professional. And to cap it all, on leaving the gig, great big snowflakes were floating down onto the flood-lit fairly tale castle - making for an interesting journey home! Thanks guys for venturing to the North of Scotland to play to a small crowd - it certainly made this long time ELP fan happy! cheers Ian --------------------------------------------- From: Ian Moffatt Sent: Friday, November 26, 2004 1:29 PM To: ELP Digest Subject: Carl Palmer Band 22 November London Astoria I attended the 3rd day of Prpgeny 2004 basically to see Carl. My other half was there to see Fish, I'm not that keen on his recent work, I think his best output was with Marillion. Very glad not to have to suffer Kevin Ayers again! The setlist was as follows: Peter Gunn Barbarian Hoedown Enemy God Guitar solo - very widdly guitarring - not my thing though undoubtedly a superb musician Some freeform Jazz - Nice! Bass - Message In A Bottle - quite outstanding sounds coming out of this bass and playing three parts at a time. I don't think I've ever heard a bass solo that has the audience singing the chorus!! Canario - "That dreadful album, I made a gum shield out of mine!" Carl's comment on the album Tarkus Trilogy Fanfare inc. drum solo (The best I've seen him play - a true master) The tracks were announced by Carl who kept coming out to front of stage with a few comments etc. They were on stage for over an hour and Carl said they could have carried on (I would have been happy with that, the best part of Fish's set was Garden Party) One of the problems with the Astoria is that it becomes a disco at 10.30 on some nights, this was one of them. You don't want to be there then unless you're in the Village People!! All in all an excellent gig Cheers! Wow !! – I saw him at the same venue last year and he was good, but this time he was even better !! I didn’t note down a set list as I was to busy enjoying a master craftsman at work. – However he opened with Peter Gunn and included Toccatta, Romeo and Juliet, Tarkus and Trilogy. The new drum kit looked and sounded great. I have never seen anyone enjoy playing and performing as much as Carl does. He also encourages and praises his 2 brilliant young guitarists all through the concert. Seldom have I been to a concert where there are youngsters from the ages of 8 onwards standing at the front enjoying the show. He promised to come back to Deal next year, so Debbie (my wife) will be coming with me just to prove to her that I can keep a grin on my face for more than 10 minutes !!! Carl has been my drumming hero for over 30 years and still no one comes near to his standard of playing skills. Thanks for keeping ELP alive through the digest. It was presented by Thomas Gottschalk, who is very, very popular in Germany and a friend of rock n´roll as well. What a surprise: One member of an all star band with Ian Anderson, Manfred Man and others was Greg Lake, playing acoustic guitar. He looked quite smart, although some pounds less wouldn´t mind. Of course he performed Lucky Man and hic voice was alright. I took my daughter along on the eve of her 17th birthday, to show her a real rock legend in action! We weren't disappointed! The Roadmender is a small venue, renovated in the last few years, and the room (I won't say hall, it's not big enough!) was all standing, and when we arrived, there was a notice on the door, "Carl Palmer, 8.30 - 9.50pm, Curfew 10pm", and bang on 8.30, to the sound of "The Can-Can", Carl and band appeared, in a wall of noise, starting with Peter Gunn and Barbarian. We were well and truly deafened for the next 2 hours - finishing half an hour after curfew, but no sign of the noise police! It was a great show, very intimate, with Carl coming round the front of the kit every track or two 2 lean on the mike and chat with the audience, creating a great rapport. Quite a few comments about the "old" days, and a world of difference from my last experience of Carl live, when he and Keith and Greg looked like ants, as we sat right at the back at Wembley in April 74. Carl hasn't lost any of his skill, still the great great drummer he always was, with a pair of guitarists to match, Paul on lead, Dave on Bass (Carl didn't tell us Dave's surname, he did Paul, but I can't remember it now, age I suppose). I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few youngsters there, my daughter loved it, even though when her school friends asked who she went to see, they said "WHO?!!" Carl did shock one couple in the audience, when he claimed to be psychic and asked them if they had had a meal in the Chinese restaurant before the show. They were amazed, they had. Carl then gave the game away, saying he'd sat near them! Anyway, a great night out for the 150ish people who were there, so now I saw Keith last year, Carl this year, will it be Greg next, or hopefully a full ELP reunion tour. We can but hope! Keith also said the concert has been remastered and should be released early in 2005 as part of a larger ELP dvd collection. The dvd will include the "Cal Jam" concert. Keith believes the dvd will include the entire "Cal Jam" concert along with the "Isle of Wright" show along with home movies shot by the band. The Toho webpage that Bjorn Are sent in http://www.toho.co.jp/movienews/0410/06godzilla_wf.html is a record of the press conference following Godzilla being admitted into Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Explaining how the production of the latest film is going, Shogo Tomiyama, the producer, mentions: "... we are also very pleased to have been able to work with a wonderful, international team. The music has been composed by Keith Emerson, one of the biggest names of the Seventies rock scene. His charisma, as well as the fact he has composed music for many films in the past, were behind our decision to ask him. He's also of the same generation as Godzilla himself. We were very fortunate that he has agreed to work with us between his busy tour schedule, since July until very recently. As for a theme song, we have asked Sum 41, who are tremendously popular among young generations. They wrote this song for the film, and their album which includes the track is already a big hit. We find this combination of the young band, Sum 41, and Keith Emerson, very special. Kyle Cooper [not sure of the spelling] is currently working on the title sequence, which will be completed in about 10 days. Judging from the rough edit, we believe it will be a beautiful sequence, condensing the 50-year history of this series into 100 seconds. Mr. Emerson being British, Sum 41 Canadian and Mr. Cooper American, our original concept for the film - "All-Star feature film with an international background" - has been realised in terms of the production line-up too, and we are very pleased about this." etc. etc. As for the information re the soundtrack CD/DVD-Audio, I have checked amazon.co.jp, as well as googled elsewhere, but I cannot find any such product mentioned anywhere on Japanese webpages, only a DVD box set of 30 Godzilla films(!!) I'm pretty sure they were filmed here, too, since it looks like our subways in one shot. The basic idea of the commercials is to show a montage of people doing good deeds for one another, passing along the Christmas spirit, so to speak. For some versions, it's just the instrumental bits, featuring Greg's acoustic guitar. In another, they use the big build to the end: "They said there'd be snow at Christmas! They Said there'd be peace on Earth! Hallelujah, Noel!" ...etc., with orchestra and everything. Really, when I see these commercials the music fits so well, I get goosebumps -- it is, after all, a great song. I'm a high school teacher, so I asked one of my classes if they'd seen these commercials and, if so, what did they think of the song. Most of my students had seen them and one girl went so far as to say she'd been trying to find the song for weeks, since she'd seen one of the commercial and really liked the music. I guess the question is, has ELP sold out? I dunno. Frankly, I don't really care, though I wouldn't be surprised if some people out there feel Bell has ruined ELP's timeless classic (albeit with ELP's consent). The thing is, if it didn't say Bell Mobility at the end, they are actually quite well composed videos that work very well with the music. As I said, they work on me.
