Wow, what a long time it's been. Just as the new year got started, I got very, very busy with work, family, everything... all at once. So, my apologies for what may be the biggest gap between Digests since it started. And my thanks to the many of you who noticed and asked about it. It seems that there's been a decent amount of ELP-related activity during this gap in service so there's plenty to report here. We've got reviews of Keith and Carl events - including a 'no advance notice' tsunami relief fundraiser at Keith's local pub and a delayed review of Carl's appearance in Switzerland. Greg gave an interview for a German magazine and appeared on German TV. Some readers even tracked down some preview snippets of Keith's contributions to the "Godzilla: Final Wars" soundtrack. And, more recently, it looks like there's some early activity on some web sites about what appears to be the awaited ELP DVD. So, without further delay, welcome to Volume 15 of the ELP Digest! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... I am an ELP-fan since 1971 and saw them in Switzerland in 1974 and 1992. Therefore I was quite excited when I heard about Carl Palmer's concert in Switzerland. I immediately booked the tickets and a hotel for me and my son, because the venue is quite far away from my home. The concert should have taken place on October 15, 2004. But two days before, I received a mail from the "Moonwalker Club" that Carl Palmer had to go to hospital after a gig in Rome and the concert had to be cancelled. What a disappointment, especially for my son David who is slightly mentally handicapped due to premature birth. He plays drums himself and Carl Palmer is his big idol. But what a joy, the same day a new date, December 10, was confirmed. The owner of the "Moonwalker Club" told me, that Carl Palmer himself called him to say sorry. Finally December 10, 2004. David and me drove to Aarburg. We attended a great concert. We were absolutely overwhelmed by the unbelievable virtuosity of all three musicians. What a privilege to be able to watch such real art so closely with only 400 other spectators. The audience was swept off their feet! Carl Palmer and his band stayed at the same hotel. David and me were at breakfast when Carl Palmer came in and I had the chance to ask him for a photograph together with my son. He was very kind and we could take the photo and talk a bit. David was in heaven (and his mother too). It was one of the best weekends in our life. --------------------------------------------- From: John Arnold Sent: Saturday, January 08, 2005 1:20 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Real Player format snippets from the new Godzilla soundtrack... ... can be found at the following URL: http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/-/Discography/A010090/VICP-62936.html I clicked 'cancel' on the 'install Japanese language pack' dialog box that came up and didn't do any harm. Just can't see the Japanese characters...but, since I wouldn't know what they said anyway, it wouldn't make any difference. The tracks that seem to have Keith's involvement are marked with 'Keith Emerson' on them. This seems to provide approx. the first 45 seconds to each track on the album. Playing his son Aaron's Korg Triton, he was then joined by Phil Williams (bass) and guitarist & singer Dave Kilminster). He said that he was going to start with a Paul McCartney piece, but then had second thoughts, as PMcC never plays any of Keith's works! (laughter). Starting with Honky Tonk Train Blues, moving through Bitches Crystal (during which the un-versed drummer coped well), a Victor Feldman boogie, Fanfare (the stand-in drummer then gracefully retired at this point), Tarkus, Rondo (incl. Bach quotes), KE played well despite the keyboard audio clipping unpleasantly for some reason. Later, he signed and sold copies of his autobiography, auctioning the last copy, all proceeds being collected in aid of the Tsunami appeal. From their stunning start at the Isle of Wight Festival, they were never afraid to tear up the rulebook and take risks, both on stage and on record. A year in the making, this stunning 2 disc set pulls together the great moments from one of the 70`s most successful and exciting bands; Emerson Lake and Palmer. For most of the decade, this dynamic trio pushed back the boundaries of what was possible in rock. Ambitious musical projects, massive, over the top stage shows and an insatiable desire to try bigger and better things meant that it could not last, but for several years, this was 70`s rock at its very best. It includes performances from every stage of their career, including 44 minutes of ELP headlining the massive California Jam Festival in 1974 on Disc 2. This rare and spectacular footage has never been released before and captures the band at the peak of their powers with a production to match. Much sought after by fans, this film includes the famous spinning piano sequence. The DVD also contains the full-length version of Beyond The Beginning, an hour-long documentary, which tells the story of this remarkable band with a refreshing honesty and candour. Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer talk about the band`s formation, rise to glory and decline in the late 70`s and the personal dynamics that drove the band". According to Tony Ortiz, the release date may not be correct, though. Looks like it is going to be a great spring (or summer (or autumn))! Reading what Ed told us on the last ELP Digest (Vol. 14 # 10), I just wondered if there would be any possibility of a truly complete show (with KE 9 from beginning to end, etc.). I can't believe the master of the entire performance was lost (though "Then and Now" forces me to do so), I refuse myself to face that apparently there's no video of a complete KE 9 and I do remember this was discussed before. I know this effort remains in the "speculative wishful thinking" column, but...great news from last month's digest regarding Keith Emerson's remark about having secured the rights to the California Jam footage! I've just obtained a DVD of Deep Purple's Cal Jam set. I'm sick over how good the quality is. After having lived with the "C-minus/D-plus" bootleg footage of ELP's portion for so long, you just can't imagine how sharp the DP video looks and sounds. At one point, a camera is so tight in on David Coverdale's microphone, you can almost tell what time it is from his wristwatch! As stingy as the Suits at ABC apparently have been over the years, you can hardly fault the network for not having done this festival right. What a difference good stage lighting makes for those 1974 behemoth studio cameras: the Deep Purple color imaging is incredible. Whoever ELP contracted to videotape the 1977 Works Montreal show should have been lined up and shot! There's simply no comparison in terms of sharp, pristine color as well as a great audio feed...Montreal was sorely lacking in both (and bear in mind the Montreal show was taped almost three and a half years later than California Jam, when presumably technology would've been at least marginally better). Well, here's hoping that 2005 will be The Year of ELP California Jam FINALLY coming to light. All we will have to do is decide what to do with all our pathetic bootleg recordings. By the way, if they truly want to use the 2003 Led Zeppelin releases as a model, a simultaneous CD release of ELPs 1972 Mar y Sol set would be the audio answer to Zep's "How The West Was Won" effort! Maybe it's Our Turn this year. --------------------------------------------- From: bpstein Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2005 8:52 PM To: elp-digest-request Subject: Cozy Powell's reviews of ELPowell shows Hi John, In case you haven't previously published this URL, I thought that other readers might find Cozy Powell's tour diary to be interesting: http://www.geocities.com/cp_hammer/elp_tournotes.html Interestingly, this is what he has to say about the Lakeland show which was recently released on CD as EMERSON LAKE & POWELL - LIVE IN CONCERT : 4 October [1986] Lakeland Arena. 3,000 people, 3 out of 10. It was recorded for Westwood One (radio). It was a disaster gig, we played really badly and I hope that tape never comes out though no doubt it will. I own the recording and I did notice that the band seems out of sync for many of the numbers--the best-played track in my opinion is "Fanfare." Having missed them in concert, I am reassured that they apparently played much better shows during that tour. Thanks for keeping it up. Last week I was looking in my local music store to see if they sold any interesting DVD's. I should know better, but I keep looking for any ELP-related discs. This time the store surprised me. On the shelf was a disc entitled: "Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Live in Concert". Without looking at the contents I bought the DVD, which was priced very nicely at just 8 Euros (!!!). At home I took a closer look at the track list. The disc contains roughly three sections: 1) Isle of Wight (1970) - total time 5 mins Blue rondo a la Turk 2) ELP - The Works Live with Orchestra (Montreal Olympic Stadium 1977) - total time: 51 mins The enemy god dances with the black spirits KE9 - 1st Impression part 2 Pictures at an Exhibition C'est la vie Piano Concerto no 1. - 3rd Movement Tank 3) Manticore Special 1973 - total time: 52 mins The track list was an even bigger surprise. Since the Manticore Special and the Works Live DVD are only available in DVD-NTSC format and therefore not suitable for my player, I was pretty happy. Unfortunately there are also some sad remarks: The sound and picture quality are not always what you want them to be. In the first part (Isle of Wight), the sound and video are clearly out of sync. The sound quality of the Montreal Concert could be better, but that remark has been made before. To complete my information: The disc is published by a German company: Falcon Neue Medien with product code: 0285. It is DVD-Region free in PAL format. All in all, I am very pleased with this DVD. My main question for now is: how come I haven't read anything before about this DVD? And are there more ELP DVD being released in PAL-format, besides the ones already mentioned in the Digest? I also have a collection of 1,200 drumsticks and the drummers are listed at my website. I have a pair of sticks Carl used during a PALMER performance in the UK. The opening act, QANGO's John Young, is a personal friend who grabbed those sticks for me. Another pair, purchased from ELP's website, were hand-signed by Carl at a drum clinic. Two sticks hand-signed by The Nice's Brian Davidson. Martyn, who authored a book on The Nice, grabbed those sticks for me. And an old Cozy Powell stick acquired from his family. Pete Riley, Keith Emerson Band drummer, provided me with sticks #1001 and #1002. Additionally, my website specializes in in-depth musician interviews.
