As you'll read about below, a new Anthology from Keith is due out soon. It will only be available in the US and Canada as an 'import' since this is a European release. Keith's announcement of this (see below for a link to web site) indicates a few previously unreleased goodies! Also, Keith's booking agent (for non-US and Canada venues) has contact information listed on the keithemerson.com web site. Also, there's more discussion of the 2-DVD set that's due out this summer. One reader contributes a review of Carl Palmer and band appearing in Mexicali, Mexico. Another provides a pointer to an interview with Dave Kilminster (guitarist/singer in the Keith Emerson Band). And another reader from Sanctuary Records seeks suggestions for what we ELP fans would like to see if a new ELP box set were going to be released. All this and more in this issue of the ELP Digest. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .… Check out "Emo’s Memos" for info about the new CD "Hammer It Out" and new links for Emo’s Worldwide (except US and Canada) booking agent at: http://www.keithemerson.com/News/whatsnew.html There’s updated info about the Carl Palmer Drum Kit from the Qango tour that will be sold on ebay later this year. My wife and me have just returned from seeing the entire 4-day Baja Prog event in Mexicali, Mexico. Of course, as you all probably know, Carl Palmer played both a concert and a clinic at this event. One of the surprises (for me, at least,) of the drum clinic was learning that Carl speaks perfect (he says, bad) Spanish. This could only have been quite thrilling to our Mexican hosts. He also told several great and humourous stories about his most embarrasing moment (cracking his ribs in (not so) Normal, Illinois,) and about how he was almost chased from a favourite dining establishment in Spain because of the stiff and moribund jazz drumming techniques of the house drummer. Of course, he demonstrated various sticking techniques such as Back-sticking, Stick-dancing, etc, all topped off with an amazing drum solo. I don't want to give away everything he did and said because I'd prefer you to see the clinics for yourselves; my wife is not a drummer and she loved every minute of it. At the end Carl lingered about for a bit of autographs and adulation before departing. That night we saw him perform at Mexicali's old and wonderful Teatro Del Estado. He started with Peter Gunn and concluded with Fanfare For The Common Man, including a 7-minute drum workout. He also auditioned ("by fire" as he put it,) his new bass player, John Whitecroft. This young man, along with new guitarist Paul Beilatowicz were more than up to the task, providing Carl with all the thunder he needed to move the show along. BTW, if you' ve never been to Baja Prog, I would suggest going. Alphonso Vidales (keyboard player of Cast) and his crew put on a very good festival. I will definitely go again. I had read this portion of the Cozy Powell diary he kept while touring with Keith and Greg in 1986 and I had to laugh. I was very fortunate to take my wife and daughter to this concert and although the band butchered a couple of numbers, they also played well on most. The songs from the ELPowell release were good and the ending done with Mars, Bringer of War with Powell's drum set rising out of a circle of revolving lights was spectacular to say the least. The whole building was shaking from the bass/moog. But the worst, and I mean the worst song was Lucky Man as they added the drums and a more than a touch of keyboards...oh dear...and you can hear it on the live cd. Anyway, for what it is worth, it speaks well of Cozy Powell to be so honest in his appraisal, but I wouldn't trade the experience for all the tea in China. I saw the band many times over the years and at their worst, they still had more going for them than many groups already inducted in the so called Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I've resisted buying it because although my DVD player is multi-region my TV isn't NTSC compatible. Can anyone shed any light on this release ? Now for a bit of a rant. I am surely not alone in my frustration at the lack of info posted on the ELP websites, especially with respect to individual's future releases and projects. Wouldn't it be great to have an update from Keith on the projects that were talked about in the Impressions mag a few years ago? To name but a few - Piano Concerto No2; Orchestral versions of Tarkus; Orchestral repertoire for Keith to appear as soloist with orchestras in Europe and US; unreleased material; new material; the Keith Emerson Anthology; live album with Glen Hughes (have I missed this one ?); Best Revenge; Movie Music 1 and 2; Is Iron Man available on CD ? What about Nighthawks? It's a long list of possibles but nothing seems to have materialised. As for Greg's god-forsaken solo album(s)......... Question (Liv) : What other pieces (in addition to Tarkus) will be on the orchestral album ? Answer (Keith) : Apart from Karn Evil 9 there will be new compositions. Much as I'm relishing the prospect of the definitive ELP DVD (and I also await details of the 35th Anniversary "Pictures" DVD with interest) what I would prefer is new material. Emerson Plays Emerson was wonderful, a real treat. But wouldn't it be nice to have more to look forward to ? Am I being too harsh ?.....but I expect great things from great musicians. Julian --------------------------------------------- From: Keith Pomfret [keith.pomfret@millennium-mm-collection.fsbusiness.co.uk] Sent: Friday, March 18, 2005 12:10 PM To: ELP Digest Subject: The Wars of the Roses The Wars of the Roses Seem to be upon us again. It's weird but about once every few years or so, someone with a desire to annexe identities for their own particular flock, pops out of the woodwork to demand that someone famous be immediately added to their 'team.' This is about the fifth time I've seen the 'obsession' with possession of celebrity applied to Keith Emerson. So, firstly, I'll declare myself. I was born in Daveyhulme (alas, out of wedlock) to an Irish woman. I'd been sired by a Scot. I was adopted and raised by a Lancastrian from Glazebury and a Canadian from Montreal. So, it's in my best interests to prove that Keith Emerson is a Northern Irish Lancastrian with a Mancunian flavour of Scotland from Canada. So, while I must applaud Mr Blakeney's tenacity at the task in hand of quietly stealing EMO from the Lanastrian pretenders to seat him on his rightful throne in York, I must ask that his research be examined more thoroughly before the triumphant procession mounts England's backbone and carries their prize up the A646 and over the Pennines to Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, Leeds and on North Easterly to York. It may be that the aforesaid Blakeney is right. He could have completed the research but neglected to include the proofs in the Monograph. So, before you can take him Mr Blakeney, consider the following: as it was told to me - heresay but a retired civil servant from that area, Todmorden historically lay on the Lancashire/Yorkshire border. Some of Todmorden - the westerly part was in Lancashire and Furness - the 1800s label fro the Grand Duchy and County Palatine of Lancaster. The rest was in that slightly less grand part of Yorkshire - one of the Ridings I think. Perhaps the west one. This situation prevailed until in 1974 or thereabouts, a vote-robbing exercise caused vast upheaval in the Local Goverment reorganisation. Part of this moved the Todmorden boundary a couple of miles west and made all of the urban district of Todmorden part of Yorkshire. So, anyone born before 1974 in Todmorden stood a chance of being either a Lancastrian or a Yorkist. There is told a tale of a young lad who had the Red Rose of Lancaster tattoed on his right bicep and the White Rose of York on the left. When drinking in Halifax the left sleeve would be rolled up. in Burnley, the right. The register of Births Marriages and deaths was in the Yorkshire part of the town and thus any birth registered would as your correspondent suggests, be registered in Yorkshire. This might satisfy a Yorkshireman hell bent on possessing Emerson for his county but it won't do for me. If Keith Emerson's actual place of birth in 1944 was indeed east of the boundary, then York may claim him with my multi-cultural blessing. But, if it turns out that On the Second of November 1944, 3 Bank View, Todmorden Urban District, was in fact west of the White Rose flag, I must, on behalf of the county that I was born in (Now Greater Manchester but at the time Lancashire, I think) ask for him back - if only to thank him personally for playing the first gig at Preston Guildhall in the 1970s (and a damn good one there again with the Nice recently) - both in Lancashire. So, it's to be maps at dawn. Current maps don't show the now removed Bank View. Nor do very old ones. If you have your proof, offer it. If not, you are invited to get it. Personally I don't think it matters where he's from - I always thought he had been brought up in Sussex somewhere. Whatever way round, he's the best keyboard player I've heard and enjoyed from the 60s to the present and where he's from is irrelevant. But, if it matters in Yorkshire, this I say. If he's yours you can have him but if he's not, give him back Cheers Keith Pomfret. Thanks so much for all your efforts - much appreciated! I have a question or two - maybe you or someone you know knows the answer: Why was ELP's live 27 minute performance of Tarkus (that includes, IMO, one of progressive rocks best live performances of a band getting-it-together: Aquatarkus !) not put on this 2 disc DVD? Am I in the minority here - do I have bad taste? I've waited for a quarter of a century to see that (Aquatarkus) piece of video . I've seen very poor quality (bootlegs I'm assuming) video of Keith's flying piano, but nothing of Aquatarkus! However; I did see ELP on their 1973/74 world tour in Vancouver, BC. That memory has stuck with me as one of the highlights in my musical life. I also saw them on the Works Tour, but it was without the orchestra - still, it was great! However; I will buy the new 2 disc DVD (to be released June 13 2005?) and am looking forward to it....... As this year's Oscar Night is way beyond its beginning, not to mention its end, it is again time to ring a bell while waving a Garland of Martian Fire Flowers for the Annual Tarkus Night. Waiting for June 13th and THE DVD, the Jury again announces an admirable though finite space of celebrations. And... here... are... the Categories! Category 1: ELP-related CDs The nominees are 1: Carl Palmer/Working Live vol 2". Carl is still very much a working man, and definitely does it live. 2: Keith Emerson: "Godzilla Final Wars" Hopefully this will be far from a final release by Keith, as just 12 of 29 tracks actually are by him alone. So even if this is a mixed blessing, it is still a blessing, being the first official release of "Crossing the Rubicon". After a furious battle, from New York to Tokyo, from drum clinics to Moog memorials, Godzilla was driven to the sea, becoming Aquagodzilla. So tatata-tah-tappettitappappickackthockerydickeryzapp - its Carl Palmer! A Golden Tarkus is projected to the rim of his working live mind. Category 2 - ELP-related DVDs As no endorsed ones was released in 2003, we will lower our voice and mention the not endorsed, as long as they still are available on Amazon. 1: Emerson Lake And Palmer - Masters From The Vault Despite being mono and definitely not remastered, this DVD captures the Master Mood for a Day or two of Classic ELP right on, from Belgium in early 1971. Warning: A huge grin and heavy breathing is unavoidable, best viewed in the dark to save others from mental damage. 2: Emerson, Lake And Palmer - Inside Emerson, Lake And Palmer: 1970 To 1995 This may be for outsiders only, still it is good to see ELP receiving some positive criticisms as well as some not so positive, from the regular suspects involved in the line of "Inside" DVDs. And great keyboard demonstrations from Mostly Autumn's keyboardist Iain Jennings! If nothing else, these releases should stir up even more DVD activity inside the ELP camp, remembering, remastering and releasing, relentlessly. And the winner is - ta-tam-tammerram-ta - Masters From The Vault! A non-endorsed Golden Tarkus is smuggled into the camp of Classic Rock, while heavily armed guards keep the ELP camp at bay (keep those arms high, Tony!). Category 3: ELP-related books Gordon G.G. Gebert: "Rock & Roll War Stories" While perhaps not quite living up to the refined taste of the Jury, the ten pages of ELP war stories, as well as the three pages of his own mimicking-Keith war story, complete with a MARZBOX and shrapnell wounds, made it possible to drag one's eyes away from the pictures from "The Girls of Rock & Roll War Stories Calender" for minutes at a time. As there was no other book out ("Kâsdejâ's Children" was released early in 2005), ma-ma-marz-fuzz-fuzz-gi-gi-girls-Gebert wins by default! Something which makes at least parts of the Jury find it even more paramount to create a healthy competition of annual ELP books. A plywood "Golden" Tarkus with Christmas tree lights in its ears and lightly clad girls on its back is exploded in the general direction of Gebert. Category 4: ELP-related Web Sites While 2003 witnessed a sharp decline, in 2004 the number of sites on the ELP Web Ring remained at 15. This may either imply a renewed interest in ELP, or that some people just are too stubborn to give up their hobbies. The candidates? As usual again, as we as usual suspected, the usual suspects, as usual: 1: ELP Digest (http://www.brain-salad.com/) 4: ELP Official Site (http://www.emersonlakepalmer.com/elp2.html) 3: Keith Emerson's Official Site (http://www.keithemerson.com/) 4: Greg Lake's Official Site (http://greglake.com/newsite/index.asp) 5: Carl Palmer's Official Site (http://www.carlpalmer.com/palmer.html) 6: Ladies of the Lake (http://valseven.tripod.com/LadiesoftheLake.htm) 7: The ultimate Analysis of Keith Emerson's Piano Concerto No.1 (http://www003.upp.so-net.ne.jp/furunovsky/) While last year the Jury deliberated for decades, this time it thought for seconds only. Fa-fa-fa-fame-fa-fame - it is Greg! And by this victory his site finally goes to the ELP Web Sites Hall of Fame and will hence be removed from the list of candidates next year. A Golden Tarkus will be sent on the day Greg releases his solo album. Category 5: ELP Mailing Lists and Discussion Groups This year the # of ELP mailing lists kept being impressive, unfortunately in reverse order of the activity on most of them. 1: ELP-DISC (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ELP-DISC/) 2: ELP Digest (http://www.brain-salad.com/) 3: The Yahoo "ELP The show never ends" (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elptheshowneverends/) 4: Greg Lake forum (http://www.greglake.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=14) 5: Keith Emerson (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Keith_Emerson/) 6: LadiesoftheLake2 (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LadiesoftheLake2/) 7: Tarkus.com http://www.elptarkus.com/forum/index.php Despite the number of nominees, there really was little doubt this year - especially as there was a sad lack of bribes sent to the Jury. Hence - snick-snack-snickery-snack-tam-ta-ta - the Greg Lake Forum receives a Golden Tarkus thread for another year of off and on topic threads, threats and throat grabbings. Not least the threat of dethroning all and any competition for ever! Category 6: Most Memorable Moment The memorable nominees are 1: Keith appearing at MoogFest commemorating Bob Moog at B. B. King's Blues, as well as giving Mr. Rick Wakeman a birthday cake in a nice table cloth crusader cape (Keith, not the cake). 2: Carl's Drum clinics - Too many to mention! 3: Greg's Charity Shows - Too few to mention! 4: Keith's tour with Scorpions - Too short a set list to mention! This time the Jury went for the gut feeling - of a birthday cake. So - hap-hap-happy-birthday to Rick - and to Keith turning 60 - by eating a Golden Tarkus cake for Keith, complete with a mischivious Manticore and a Moog topping. NAM! Category 7: Highest Hopes for 2005 And in the glorious tradition of the Jury, The Armadillo Awards are rounded off on hopefull notes, befittingly played on a MARZVOX. Category 7a) The PROMISED Ones (so get them out, lads and gentelemen!): * The Beyond the Beginning DVD! * The ELP book by Ed Macan (which is getting better and better, not the least as it is finished and ready to be released!) * The 2nd Edition of the "Welcome Back" ELP book * Greg's album of re-recorded ELP tunes (which we as every year hope is excellent) * Greg's new solo album (which also received the same procedure as last year, mr. Winterbottom) * The Nice DVD 7b) The Perhaps Probable Ones * ELP: Official Live releases from the 1970's, in Dolby Surround, based on Quadrophenic tapes * The Nice: New CD from the 2003 Concerts * The Nice: An improved BBC sessions CD - superior recordings exist, and Sanctuary has got them * Keith Emerson: A new studio album, with the KE band, and bonus tracks with the Nice: "Man in the Long Black Coat" and "the 7 Bridges Suite" Category 7c) The Possible Infinite (and Unpardonably) Postponed Ones * Keith's Second Piano Concerto (which every year is getting better and better) * The 2CD with Emo and Wakey (which every year is getting less and less realistic) * The live CD of Keith with Mark Bonilla, Glen Hughes and some Dragons from the 1990's (every year an even longer time ago). * An ELP reunion (yes, we know Carl, Keith and Greg are two different people) In category 7a the winner is - droo-droo-droooool- ooloooloooloool - ELP 2-DVD with a "Major Budget"! In category 7b the winner is - whine-whine-com-plain-plain-pleaaaaase-pleaaaaaaaaase- whineineine-whineine-hurr-hurr-y - a new Keith studio album! In category 7c the winner is again Keith's Second Piano Concerto, hence put on the Postponed Hall of Fame, to keep it safely removed from the Jury's Godzilla moods when not getting satisfied. Overall winner in category 7 is of course Beyond the Beginning of the Jury's praise, as long as it is an ELP 2-DVD with a "Major Budget". I am now 58 and have been hoping for years that the Krupa film would be released on video in the UK. To be fair, as a film it is mediocre, but Krupa played drums on the soundtrack for Sal Mineo to mime to. If Carl ever reads this I wonder if he (or any other reader) has any influence to either persuade a film distributor to release it, or suggest one of the tv companies (TCM?) buy the rights to show it. From Buenos Aires - Argentina Pato [ Editor's Note: Please note that I've added Pato's attempt at transcribing these lyrics (including the amazingly hard-to-decipher 'Curse of Baba Yaga') at the following URL: http://www.brain-salad.com/Lyrics/PAAE.txt ] --------------------------------------------- From: Burman, Debby Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 9:01 AM To: elp-digest Subject: 35th anniversary tour Hi, My brother and I were just wondering if ELP is going to be planning a 35th anniversary world tour in the near future. We live in New York so hopefully that would be part of the tour. Thank you so much. Debby Burman =========================== ELP-related products, tribute bands, promoters (The ELP Digest does not endorse, etc.) =========================== From: Justin Beaney Sent: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 9:14 AM To: elp-digest Subject: New Novel With ELP References Hi John I’m writing to let everyone know about a novel that I’ve just had been published that features a good number of references to prog rock bands and, in particular (and most significantly in terms of actually having a relevance to the plot) ELP and Genesis. The book (called Kâsdejâ’s Children) is actually a "fast paced, intricately plotted thriller with a supernatural twist" according to the blurb on the back, but the central character is a bit obsessed about prog (some might even say he’s a little sad!) and whilst you don’t need to be a fan yourself to enjoy it, there are loads of little conversations and references to various things that members of a community like this may well enjoy. You won’t see it on any book shelves as it’s something I’ve had to pay out of my own pocket to get published and the quantity of the first (and probably last) print run is ridiculously tiny! Anyhow, it can be ordered from all good retailers in the UK (ISBN 1857565894, Published by Janus) and is also available from Amazon at the following link, where there is a bit more information for anyone who might possibly be interested in taking a risk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1857565894/qid%3D1109709776/202-8832982-5950268 If that link doesn’t work then simply search for “Kasdeja” on Amazon. Other than that, the only thing I can try and tempt you with are the following comments from Alan Hewitt, editor of the Genesis internet fanzine The Waiting Room On-line: "If you want an excellent supernatural thriller with a brilliantly unexpected ending then this is for you! Not only that; the book's hero is a Prog Rock Genesis fan... sound far-fetched? Believe me it ISN'T. It has been a while since I enjoyed a work of fiction as much as I enjoyed this one. Give it a try." Apologies to everyone for this blatant plug (and to those who have already read about this on ELP-DISC), but it was a book written with this kind of audience in mind so I might as well at least tell you all about it!
