Our thoughts go out to anyone and everyone affected by the recent events in London. There's a lot of information in this oft-delayed version of the ELP Digest. The ELP DVD 'Beyond the Beginning' has been released in the European 'PAL' format and reviews are coming in. The rest of us wait for an NTSC version that will play correctly in other parts of the world. The most recent news is that Greg Lake has announced dates for a fall tour of the UK. A link to the list of dates on his web site is below. We're being asked for contribution to memories for an article commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Works, Vol.1 tour. Carl Palmer has an upcoming live concert DVD and there are plans for a tour. Perhaps some of you hadn't heard about the need for Keith Emerson to cancel/postpone the European tour of the Keith Emerson Band that should have started by now. Just before embarking on the tour, Keith needed to do some medical tests. So far, the word is that he's fine and now we're waiting for word on when the tour will be re-scheduled. Also, I've added an addendum about some information that comes from the Rick Wakeman web site about Rick's plans to retire from live performances at the end of 2006. All this and more as you read this issue of the ELP Digest! - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... "Beyond the Beginning" went on sale in the UK on June 13, and Sanctuary Records has a "microsite" for the DVD at: http://www.sanctuaryrecords.co.uk/elp/ Sanctuary says the "stunning 2-disc set features performances from every stage of the band's career, including 44-minutes of rare, previously unreleased footage of ELP headlining the massive California Jam Festival in 1974." Reviews follow in this edition of the ELP Digest, and the worldwide DVD release (in many formats) is due in August (according so some sources - we're waiting for official word on this). --------------------------------------------- Keith's site has a new look on the home page, and a thank you note to everyone who sent well wishes during his recent health concerns. Highly recommended reading, in which Carl talks about, amongst other things, his pre-ELP days and his current activities with Drum Clinics UK. The possibility of ELP playing live to celebrate 35 years looks highly unlikely, although Carl says that his band will be performing in the UK in November. Carl also mentions that in addition to the new DVD released in June there will be a TV show DVD to follow this, and the Isle Of Wight festival to come out at Christmas. Thanks for all the updates, John. Those of us who saw the band live with the orchestra during that tour will never forget it! To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the tour, I plan to write a magazine article for publication in 2007. As part of that article, I'd very much like to interview members of the "ELP Orchestra," or anyone who was part of the tour's massive road crew. I'd also welcome the recollections of those who attended one of the tour's shows (with the orchestra.) Finally, I'd like to get copies of any of the large numbers of articles that appeared in the rock press dealing with the tour. (I especially remember a great article in "Time" detailing the band's decision to drop the orchestra. The author of that piece compared dropping the orchestra with the British withdrawal from Dunkirk early in WWII!) I request any members of the orchestra or road crew who would agree to being interviewed to contact me at workstour77@yahoo.com Anyone who has memories of the tour they'd like to share, or can provide copies of any magazine/newspaper articles dealing with the tour can reach me at the same e-mail address. Bjorn Are ----- Original message to Steve Hammonds at Sanctuary Group ----- Sent: 29. mai 2005 14:53 To : 'Steve.Hammonds' Subject : ELP box set suggestions Hello, Steve . I just saw your request sent to ELP digest on what fans would like to see on an ELP box set, unused rare tracks etc. What we definitely do not need is another compilation of "greatest hits" - that has been done too often already with ELP, and would be a real bummer this time around. Having followed the band since the 70's I think I have a good knowledge about what is available, at least stuff that has been floating around more or less officially. And as most of the rare tracks have gone into the previous box set (e.g. "Bo Diddley") and the various retrospectives of the boys (e.g. Carl's "Percussion Concerto"), I think it would be very good to have a box set of unreleased live material, or at least 3 of the CD's on the box set containing rare live material, and one CD or so with rare studio material. There has been all this rumours, confirmed in private with members of the band, that there exist good recordings of old live material (picked at random: "Greg Lake himself confirmed the recent discovery of 16-track tapes of the 1972 Mar y Sol concert....", "Carl told about the discovery of quadrophenic recordings of 1974 concerts", ) My suggestions would be: A: Rare live material: - Barbarian, Take a Pebble, Tank, Knife Edge and Rondo from the Lyceum Dec 9th 1970 concert (the same concert as on the "Pictures at an Exhibition" DVD). This has never been released on CD (BTW, it would be a real treat to release the whole concert on DVD as well, especially without the psychedelic parts, see http://floppycheese.free.fr/elp/lyceum/lyceum.htm - The rest of the concert from Newcastle City Hall, March 26th 1971 (the material besides that which went into the official "Pictures at an Exhibition" release) - The whole Mar-Y-Sol concert from April 1972 (parts were available on the previous box set (Greg Lake's "From the Beginning" retrospective) - "Endless Enigma" live, (released on the "official bootlegs", however that stuff should be cleaned up/remastered even more, or perhaps there does exist a better tape?) - "Pictures at an Exhibition" from the same concert that made it into the "Welcome Back My Friends" live album from 1974 - Benny the Bouncer" live 1974 - "Pirates" and "Abbadons' Bolero" from the Montreal Olympic Stadium 1977 concert (not available on "Works Live", has so far been on the Montreal video/DVD only - though 'Abaddon's Bolero' was on Carl's 'Working Live' CD). - The rest of the Royal Albert Hall material from 1992 (not all tracks made it into the album) - A full 1998 concert, e.g.1998/AUG/2 Flynn Theater, Burlington, see http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~rm2t-smt/html/livesource/elp/21stcenturyschizoidtarkus.htm A good list of bootleg material is available at http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~rm2t-smt/html/elp-livesouce.htm Se also http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~rm2t-smt/html/livesource/elp/rarities.htm though some stuff is with other colaborators. I think you get the idea. B: Rare studio material - The full "Man in the Long Black Coat" piece which originally was meant to be on "In the Hot Seat" - and was split up and rearranged into "One By One" and "Man in the Long Black Coat". - "Karelia Suite" originally meant for "In the Hot Seat", dropped due to Trevor Rabin not having time to add a guitar part - "Benny the Bouncer" instrumental (is being played on the "Manticore" video documentary from 1973) - Tarkestra (orchestrated Tarkus, a part was available on Keith's website for some time in the 90's) - Demo material which was to be made into an 1998 ELP album, e.g. "Crossing the Rubicon" - Any available other demos or rehearsals, especially from the 70's. I think you get the idea, here as well. This was sent to me from a mate who has to review the new dvd. "The first disc is just filmed performances of the various songs like Take A Pebble, Fanfare For The Common Man and Hoedown etc. all taken at different times including footage from the Beat Club and Live In Italy and Belgium. There are some interesting extras such as the band taking part in a celebrity car race at a race circuit in 1973 and a couple of other things. Disc 2 contains Live At The California Jam which has been edited but is nevertheless good as I certainly had never seen much of this footage and then there is the documentary which again is excellent. There is also footage of the Nice performing America, King Crimson at Hyde Park performing 21st Century Schizoid Man (Dubbed I think) and footage of The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown performing Fire. In its own way it is as good as the Zeppelin Anthology DVD of a couple of years back and it has been compiled and presented in a similar way. Ultimately if you ever liked ELP you will want to have it. It has been very well done." Take care Jim --------------------------------------------- From: EAMONN [EAMONN] Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 12:00 PM To: elp-digest Subject: The California Jam - beyond the beginning DVD. As the date approaches of the launch of the new DVD I thought I might post. I just checked issue 1 volume 1 of the Digest issued on 2 November 1991 has a mention of the California Jam and the wish that it be released. So the long awaited is about to happen. There is a full page ad for it in the latest issues of Classic Rock the UK mag. the same issue has a review of Hammer it Out, which says "listen to the whole CD and you could lose the will to live." So it must be good. I have a fairly poor copy of the California Jam Video and watched it to check it out again. The video I have is 41 minutes long and the running time of the jam portion of the New DVD is supposed to be 44 Minutes. So its exactly the same piece with the truncated version of Toccata etc, It'll be great to have it anyway. I hope they remove the horrible voice over introducing the band etc. The total running time of the 2 DVD set is 4 hours and 10 minutes. so the promo videos on disc 1 should be fairly interesting. People over this side of the Atlantic may be interested that it is available (full cost delivered) from play.com for €23.99 or £14.99 sterling. Hammer it Out is available for €17.99 or £10.99 sterling. There is a full track list on Keith's website. I had recently purchased the Inside Emerson Lake and Palmer DVD which is really interesting for the real fans. I thought it was a good purchase. However they then reissued it a 2 disc set with what they call a case study of ELP live on disc 2. I bought this also. Disc 2 is the early ELP concert recorded I think in Belgium, which people may have seen on again poor quality video. I think it was called Pop of the Seventies and it opens with them in a hotel bed together and running late for the concert. Interesting concert to have and includes Barbarian, Tank, Take a Pebble. However the DVD does not play well in my machine. I have two dvd players and it comes out black and white on one and all shaky on the other. I have YES at QPR 1975 DVD that exhibits the exact same symptoms, any idea about this. The 2 dvd set comes with a booklet which runs through each track of ELPs albums. Every now and again people ask the digest about trivia, so now it's my turn. On WBMFTTSTNE Keith says some thing about Rocky the roadie. Which ends "I see he does a wonderul tap dance to When Keeper Bob comes over the Hillside." This has always intrigued me, has anybody any idea what this refers to. I'll end with a quote from the press release for the new 2 dvd set. Enjoy and keep up the good work. "Between 1970 and 1978, Emerson Lake and Palmer were one of the most exciting rock bands on the planet." I mentioned in another e-mail that tescos had on their list a DVD for ELP call monkeys trousers. This now seems to have disappeared. Mick --------------------------------------------- From: Philip Barrow [phillybarrow] Sent: Sunday, June 12, 2005 11:27 AM To: elp-digest-request Subject: ELP DVD Beyond the Beginning Hi Thanks for continuing all the good work with the digest. It's a bumper month for ELP fans with the release of Keith Emerson's CD anthology and the new ELP Official DVD. I've watched all of the DVD now and must say that it has definitely been worth the wait. No fan should hesitate. The Cal Jam footage is obviously the focal point, and its great to see it in good quality at last. I believe that this was rescued from ABC by an employee making a copy just before they were told to wipe all the tapes, so thank God he did: The quality is not quite 100% which it would have been from the original masters, but is still way above anything we could have hoped for. A shame that they didn't include all of the footage from Great Gates of Kiev that they could have, though: It starts just where Keith runs towards the piano for the spinning sequence. On my old VHS copy it starts with the Hut of Baba Yaga and goes right through including the Hammond thrashing. Some of the missing footage appears in the documentary on the DVD and looks to be of good quality, so I wonder why they omitted these 5 minutes. Unfortunately any dreams of seeing the whole unedited 2 hour performance disappeared back in the late 70s sometime when the full tapes were apparently destroyed: Shame on ABC forever, I still dream a copy will surface somewhere someday... Disc 1 has some absolutely classic stuff too, although I don't know why they duplicated 2 of the Cal Jam performances: Surely they could have put something else in their place? For instance the Beat Club 1970 Knife Edge, bits of which appear on the documentary. Minor quibbles though, the whole thing is just fab and we must thank the band, Pilato management and all at Sanctuary Visual Entertainment. If there's any justice this will sell and sell.... I wasn't so impressed by the claims on Keith's anthology as to the inclusion of 5 unreleased tracks: The only unreleased track is Lament for Tony Stratton Smith. For instance, The Church is the version from the Changing States CD. The Nice BBC stuff was also on the very first Cd of Nice BBC sessions in the mid 90's. Best Revenge Orchestral Suite makes up for it, though. I would encourage other fans to contact Steve Hammonds at Sanctuary as you suggested in the last Digest (May). As you said, they are planning an ELP box set and want fan input into what to include. I suggested that most of us probably have the studio stuff several times over now, and that what we really want are true outtakes, alternate versions and unreleased live performances. The Hendrix and Free box sets did this and I feel its the way to go: New fans aren't going to start with a big purchase like this, and are likely to end up with all the other stuff first, much like we have. Send him your opinions guys and maybe we'll get something as tasty as the DVD. I have beeen watching it and I have mixed feelings about this release. Here are some notes that may be helpful: DISC 1 - Before The Beginning 1- Promo Videos (before the ELP era): I have seen better materials from the BBC Sessions. 2- ELP in Pictures: Most of videos are already released. Carl Jam's ones appear two times (see DISC 2 content). Again, I think there are better unreleased materials somewhere. I recently found some two very good short clips in the Internet that do not appear here. DISC 2 - California Jam 1974 1- California Jam 1974: This part concentrates most of the DVD box value. Video/ Sound quality is medium (we know the reasons) but at least this is a new musical material for me. This is ELP on a total different stage when compared with other videos. I am still evaluating it (musically speaking) but it seems a rather good performance. 2- BEYOND THE BEGINNING Documentary: A good documentary but still misses some interesting clips we can find in the Internet. 3- Extended edit of unseen rehearsal film from 1973: This is a very good film. It shows how ELP music was developped. 4- Extended edit of unseen Brands Hatch celebrity motor race featuring all of ELP: I am not personally interested in this type of videos 5- Extended edit of exclusive new interview with Bob Moog..: Nothing new. --------------------------------------------- From: F L Dunkin Wedd Sent: Saturday, June 25, 2005 12:56 PM To: ELP Digest Subject: Beyond the Beginning DVDs Just got my copy of Beyond the Beginning. Highly recommended - everyone on this list will want to buy it. It is truly brilliant. Just a few highlights from the two DVDs: Disc One : ---------- 1) Before the Beginning with video of Fire - Arthur Brown, Nice - America (Beat Club 68), Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid. 2) ELP at Brands Hatch (b/w) 3) 1973 KE9 Rehearsal noodling with percussion, rehearsals of KE9 without vocals 4) An interesting interview with Bob Moog, including this: "One of Keith's great talents is to approach a new instrument... and without anybody explaining too much about it to turn the knobs and put a few switches to see what happens and then immediately get an idea of how that can be used musically..." 4) IOW footage - the cannons are very satisfactory! 5) Pirates from Montreal with good sound Disc 2 ------- The Cal Jam footage is like WBMFTTSTNE with video - KE is even more amazing when you can see the fingers! The spinning piano is thankfully brief and and truly scary! Documentary: great and candid contributions from Harvey Goldsmith and Stewart Young, and also from Keith Altham and John Gaydon. I never realised how much of the material came exclusively from Keith. In the rehearsals we see him teaching Greg a bassline and then teaching Carl a drum rhythm. And in an interview he makes it clear that he didn't care what happened as long a GL and CP played what he had written. And we learn a lot about the disagreements. I was never a great lover of GL's yucky sentimental ballads and silly lyrics, but felt he was too often wasted - how boring must it have been to play the basslines in Fanfare etc while KE showed off? He should also get more credit than KE gives him as a producer. Very often you can tell which member of a band produced because their part is uppermost in the mix (listen to many Yes recordings to hear amazing keyboard players just disappear). Not with GL: it was always a good balance. On the other hand, it's just comical to hear GL taking credit for the Lucky Man solo! My best ELP buy for years - highly recommended. If you haven't already - buy it now.
