I'm finally getting back onto a monthly schedule and there's a lot to read about. Greg has announced some upcoming tour dates and did some workshops in Germany. Keith's added an update on his status and revealed some dates in Japan. Carl's site has tour dates and updates, too. And word has it that the US-playable (NTSC) version of the ELP: Beyond the Beginning DVD should be available soon. I'm looking forward to seeing it for myself as well as receiving your reviews for future editions of the Digest. And there was a huge response to the question in the last issue about the reference to 'Rocky' and the tap dance comment that you can hear on WBMFTTSTNE. Thanks everyone! I had no idea what that was all about. You do, indeed, learn something every day. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... "Double A Entertainment" of Germany is responsible for the organization of this tour. All European fans in and around Germany should check the http://www.d-ae.com website for detailed tour dates. I called the folks and they promised to have the dates online next week starting July 18. BTW they are completely blown away by the overwhelming response of the German fans to the initial anouncement of the GL tour in the German Prog-Magazine ECLIPSE June issue. On June 29 and 30, Greg gave 2 lectures at the Music University of Weimar, one with the topic "Rock Musicians - are they either impulse generators of musical art today or marionettes/string puppets of the music industry", the other one about "crossover of classic music and rock music based on the example of Pictures at an Exhibition". Along with these lectures he performed a 4 days crossover workshop together with the University's orchestra on works of Franz Liszt. Those who understand German can check the respective website of the Franz Liszt University of Weimar. Hopefully someone who had a chance to attend those lectures (they were not open for the general public, but for registered students only) will give some insight what Greg presented. I do bass, guitar and vocals with UK ELP tribute "Noddys Puncture". We're appearing evenings on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 August 2005 at "The Six Bells" inn at Chiddingly, East Sussex, UK. This is (with apologies to our celtic members) (I defy anyone of any nationality to stand at Cardiff Arms Park, hear the crowd sing this and not have a tear in their eyes) the unofficial Welsh national anthem. --------------------------------------------- From: BJCPIK Sent: Monday, July 11, 2005 5:19 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Re: ELP Digest Vol. 15 #03 (Rocky) Ha Ha. Eamon from Ireland's mis-hearing of what Keith was actually referring to when he was referring to Rocky the roadie's tap dance. "When Keeper Bob comes over the Hillside" is actually "We'll keep a welcome in the hillside" an old Welsh trad wartime song much aired by former goon Harry Secombe. Perhaps Rocky was welsh? Brian Prestwick --------------------------------------------- From: doh Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2005 6:35 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Response to Digest Vol 15 No# 3 (Rocky) In the latest Digest (Volume 15 No# 3)Eamonn writes: --------- From: EAMONN [EAMONN] Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 12:00 PM To: elp-digest Subject: The California Jam - beyond the beginning DVD. Every now and again people ask the digest about trivia, so now it's my turn. On WBMFTTSTNE Keith says some thing about Rocky the roadie. Which ends "I see he does a wonderul tap dance to When Keeper Bob comes over the Hillside." This has always intrigued me, has anybody any idea what this refers to. Éamonn (Ireland) --------------- The reported quote isn't quite right. Keith actually says: "He does a wonderful tap dance to 'We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside'" which fails to get the expected laugh so he follows it with "Forget it then!" "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillside" is an old Welsh song made popular by the late singer (and former Goon) Harry Secombe - although loads of artists have covered it, including Shirley Bassey. If you've never heard it - don't bother! There are some genuinely stirring Welsh anthems - this isn't one of them!!!! N.J. --------------------------------------------- From: phil blakeney Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2005 7:40 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Eamon's query re Emo's chatter on WWBFTTSTNE What Keith actually says just before launching into the Sherriff, is "Wales has produced many things; Tom Jones, old Rocky here... yes, he does a wonderful tap-dance to "We'll Keep a Welcome in the Hillsides". (reference to a Welsh song; found a description as follows: "Wales is known world-wide as being "The Land Of Song", and this famous Welsh song (Jones, Joshua, Harper) epitomises Wales as a country which will always be singing and which will always be welcoming. The word hiraeth is used in the third verse - a word which is almost impossible to translate, but is frequently used in Welsh as a means of describing the longing that one would feel when away from Wales for any length of time." Phil --------------------------------------------- From: Paul Dickinson Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2005 5:08 PM To: elp-digest@reluctant.com Subject: Fwd: ELP Digest [Volume 15, Issue 3] (Rocky) In ELP Digest [Volume 15, Issue 3] EAMMONN wrote > Every now and again people ask the digest about trivia, > so now it's my turn. On WBMFTTSTNE Keith says some thing about > Rocky the roadie. [...] Keith actually says about "Liverpool" Rocky the roadie "I hear he does a wonderful tap dance to 'We'll keep a welcome in the hillsides' ". From this I take it that although Rocky may come from Liverpool he actually has Welsh heritage (Liverpool being just over the border from Wales) - "We'll keep a welcome in the hillsides" being a traditional Welsh song occasionally used at rugby events. Paul --------------------------------------------- From: Jonathan Smart Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 3:38 AM To: ELP Digest Subject: 60's TV series Don't know whether any UK people out there might know this, but do you recall a children's TV series in the late 60's (ITV - possibly London or Southern as the channels were then) which had The Nice's 'The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack' as a title theme? All I remember about it was that it was set in London and involved (I think) a gang of children solving mysteries - I seem to remember a T Rex (dinosaur as opposed to Glam Rock band...) image. Thing is, hearing the title music at the time sparked a series of coincidences involving discovery of my musical tastes. Everyone else at school was into the sort of stuff liked by the 'fashionable' school members, but I heard this title track as incidental music and instinctively liked it, not knowing who wrote it. The next thing was, I tuned in to a John Peel programme on Beeb 1 ('How It Is), early evening, to see this amazing band doing Bernstein's number 'America' and was completely wowed. I now knew I wanted to buy anything by this band 'The Nice' and ordered their (only at that stage) album TTOED expecting to hear America among the tracks, but was blown away hearing the TV title music which I'd liked previously instead! The only three albums I owned were TTOED, King Crimson's first album and Atomic Rooster's first album, so you see a pattern emerging at this early stage. Needless to say, I revelled in having developed a taste for music few of my contemporaries had really come across. Does anyone remember this aforementioned TV programme and could they put me out of my misery by naming it? Regards, Jonathan Smart --------------------------------------------- From: Anthony Cornicello Sent: Tuesday, August 02, 2005 10:40 PM To: elp-digest Subject: A few questions Two questions for the digest: 1.) Has anyone reviewed the Moog DVD? It's got a bit of KE in it, and might be of interest to the readers. I'll be happy to throw in a few words if it hasn't been done already. 2.) Has anyone ever explained the amount of cables on the modular moog? I've worked on one of those, and my most complex patch comes nowhere near the amount of cables I've seen on KE's Moog!! Does he have several patches set up at once, so he can switch between them? (That would make the most sense.) Did he have some custom-made device that worked like a 'preset' switch?
