CARL PALMER, LEGENDARY DRUMMER AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK PIONEER, ANNOUNCES FIRST SOLO NORTH AMERICAN TOUR. Founding Member of EMERSON LAKE & PALMER and ASIA returns with new band, and all new show: "CARL PALMER CELEBRATES THE MUSIC OF ELP." Drummer extraordinaire Carl Palmer, one of the world's most acclaimed percussionists will embark on his first solo North American tour, with his new power trio, THE CARL PALMER BAND. The group, which features Palmer on drums and percussion, guitarist Paul Bielatowicz and bassist Stuart Clayton, will serve up an evening of classic ELP music, presented with exciting and innovative new versions. An all-instrumental show, "Carl Palmer Celebrates The Music of ELP" promises to be among the most musically compelling live shows of 2006. The tour, which will begin in late May and continue through early July. will cross the United States and include shows in Canada. The Carl Palmer Band will be playing showcase clubs, intimate theaters, and Performing Arts Centers. "I am very excited to be returning to North America to see and play for the many loyal fans I have come to know over the years, " says Palmer, who announced his tour this week from Europe. where Palmer has been touring since 2002. "This is a trio, which ELP also was, but we have replaced the keyboards with some very powerful guitar interpretations of that classic music." Among the songs featured in the show are: "Tarkus," "Fanfare For The Common Man", and "Hoedown". Adds Palmer: "Although ELP had a lot of vocal hit songs, we were really about musicianship and conveying the spectrum of emotions through our instruments. Many of the classic elements of these songs remain, but they have been updated and reinterpreted through the my new band." In addition to nearly two hours of classic ELP songs, fans will be treated to Palmer's innovative and highly creative drum work. While in his previous bands, ELP and ASIA, Palmer's remarkable drum solos were often a high-point in those shows. Carl Palmer first emerged on the British rock scene at the age of 17, as drummer for the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. After Brown recorded his #1 hit, "Fire", Palmer toured the US for the first time. He left to form Atomic Rooster with Vincent Crane, another Brown alumnus. In 1970, he formed ELP with Keith Emerson (ex-The Nice) and Greg Lake (King Crimson's singer and bassist.) ELP, was among the pioneer super-groups launched during the era of Blind Faith, Crosby Stills & Nash and Led Zeppelin. They eventually became one of the biggest rock bands of all time, and the first group to effectively blend rock, jazz and classical music for the pop music masses. Together, on and off from 1970 through 1998, Emerson Lake & Palmer, sold over 35 million albums. Upon the initial demise of ELP in 1980, Palmer formed another progressive rock supergroup, ASIA, with members of YES, King Crimson and The Buggles. With Asia, through much of the 1980s, Palmer would go on to have a second multi-platinum career. "My new group is a great band and I am certain the fans will enjoy our unique versions of these timeless classics," says Palmer. " I look forward to returning to both the US and Canada and seeing everyone once again." The initial leg of the tour is as follows. The complete list of shows will be announced shortly. Sounds promising. I got hold of Greg's "Backstage DVD for £6 odd from Play.com. Just about worth the price. I'm certainly glad I didn't pay double that amount for it at the gig I attended. It really doesn't really give much new insight into the music. With a release of that kind I really would like to hear the band rehearsing (rather than simply performing the pieces in a rehearsal studio) and gain some understanding into how the pieces are arranged for a live performance what they are trying to achieve musically with the chosen pieces. A new nice batch of ELP and Keith Emerson material being released this spring, 2 DVD's and one CD. DVD: "BIRTH OF A BAND" - April release "The gig that started it all and set them off on the road to stardom - it's the complete Isle of Wight debut festival performance from the newly formed ELP. This DVD comes from Oscar winning director Murray Lerner's filming of the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival, and it was ELP's first proper 'live' concert, their only previous gig having been a warm up gig in Plymouth the previous night. Playing in front of 600,000 people at what remains the biggest festival in rock history, they became overnight stars, with the press raving about their virtuosity and daring. They would go on from here to become multi-million selling artists, but this unique film was there at the birth of one amazing new band." Running Time: 67 Minutes Approx. Track List: 01. Pictures At An Exhibition 02. Take A Pebble 03. Rondo 04. Nutrocker" If it is not a typo, Barbarian is missing from the list. Seems it is true, then, that they didn't start filming ELP until a bit into their show. Well, a must-have, anyhow! DVD : C'EST LA VIE (DVD-All Region/Pal) - Out Now "A budget compilation DVD from Europe that gathers together 11 tracks selected from right across ELP's career. The performances come from some of the existing videos and DVD's, but it's a fine selection of tracks that runs for ninety minutes, and at this price, it's a nice'n'cheap addition to your ELP collection." I wathced this DVD tonight and here is where the tracks come from, 01. Introduction (snippets from all the tracks) 02. Rondo [Bach Improvisations] (early footage) - MASTERS FROM THE VAULTS (maybe a bit better footage, not quite sure, though) 03. C'est La Vie (orchestral world tour) - MONTREAL if anyone doubted) 04. Tiger In The Spotlight (Monteaux) - MONTREAUX (if anyone doubted) 05. Nutrocker (early footage)- MASTERS FROM THE VAULTS 06. Pictures At An Exhibition (orchestral world tour) - MONTREAL 07. Hoedown (Monteaux)- MONTREAL 08. Take A Pebble (early footage) - MASTERS FROM THE VAULTS 09. Tank (orchestral world tour) - MONTREAL 10. Knife Edge (early footage) - MASTERS FROM THE VAULTS 11. Oasis Of Luck (early studio rehearsal footage) - Rather bizarre, this is an ELP video (about 2 minutes studio outtake from the bonus track on "Beyond the Beginning", while the sound is from a jazz group playing... not ELP, AFAIK) Point is: This DVD contains ALL tracks from (the not band condoned) "Masters from the vaults", except Barbarian , so it is possible to say that the Belgim TV 1971 performance now has a kind of official release. If neither this nor Isle of Wight do contain Barbarian, the conclusion is that our guys are about to release one DVD of Barbarian performances only, from IoW, Belgium, Lyceum etc. etc. Looking forward to that;-) CD: KEITH EMERSON: "OFF THE SHELF" - Due in March 2006 According to an interview Keith did with Record Collector in 2004, "Off the shelf" seems to be unreleased material from before 1970. Hopefully from after his early teen age performances ;-) Regards Bjorn-Are =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: Perry Casilio Sent: Friday, November 18, 2005 5:09 PM To: elp-digest Subject: RE: ELP Digest Vol. 15 #7 (young ELP fans & Lost) Hi, I just want everyone to know that ELP is a favorite of my 18 year old daughter. As a pianist and clarinetist studying music at Southern Oregon University, she's well versed in music both past and present. My daughter has been amazed at the versatility of ELP. She appreciates both the ballads and the more involved pieces. She's a big fan of Trilogy as well as the Lake Ballads, "From The Beginning" and "Lucky Man." As a fan with diverse interests in Classic Rock, Jazz, Classical, and modern bands such as ColdPlay, Embrace, and U2, she's amazed at the ground ELP travelled. Interestingly, she's a fan of the much maligned Works 2 and was blown away, since she's played the piece, with Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag as arranged on Works 2. Recently, she went to a High School Band Competition for the State of Oregon at the University of Oregon and was amazed to hear one of the larger schools playing "Karn Evil 9." She came home and told me excitedly. Also, on an interesting side note, her and I both feel that the Lake Classic, "From The Beginning" would be an excellent song to use for an ad on ABC'S HIT TV SHOW-"LOST." If there were a way to have the famous line, "you'll see it's all clear, we were meant to be here... From The Beginning," interspersed with the main characters on LOST it might add to the mystery in the show. Since the show deals with the fact that some of the characters feel that the plane crash onto the island was on purpose, the song could only add to the show's appeal. However only 210 people attended in a 1900 seater Hall. The band was phenomenal particularly the young guitarist. Greg hung around afterwards to sign and chat, What a gent he is!! Don't agree with the comment about 'Hang on to a Dream' Greg's version is Fab, straight off the Manticore Box, only his voice is back where it should be now !! For non UK residents can I explain ELP's status here, not counting the Black Moon gigs, and a 2 venue tour (London/Liverpool) in 1974, their last full UK tour was in 1972. Unfortunately no other major artist/band in the known universe persistently ignored the UK audience as much as ELP did (painfull I know, but true). Mid 70's - Mid 80's; Elton, Paul McCartney and even Zeppelin came to the City Hall several times. The teenage angst of having to insist at school that the greatest live band in the world was in fact a bunch of Brits who nobody ever saw, and who were prone to producing big band jazz records more embarrasing than my dad's Woody Herman collection is all coming back to me now (Ha Ha !!) Anyway, to the point. The UK's most famous and influential DJ, John Peel died in 2004. His famous quote was "ELP are a waste of talent and electricity". Anyway, there was a TV documentary shown before Xmas about a locked box found at his house containing his most precious (presumably favourite) records. Some of the 130 records were introduced\ by other musicians, and low and behold half way through the programme Elton John was seen fereting through the box to produce a 45 single of "The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack" by The Nice. WCI owned Atlantic Records, which ELP was under contract with for Works I, II, Love Beach, In Concert. A friend of my dad's up at Atlantic knew I was an ELP fanatic and arranged for him to meet Emerson who was in the building - 75 Rockefeller Plaza - I believe in an attempt to renegotiate things with Atlantic. It is very similar to the footage from 1970 Lyceum footage with one difference (and this is the part that makes me know I have not yet found the video) – during Take a Pebble at the conclusion of the "I had a dog and his name was Blue" bit there is this exchange between Greg Lake and Carl Palmer where Carl comes out from behind the drum kit to Greg’s mic to do the "fingercymbal" and Greg (and the audience) are laughing and Carl keeps saying "no, but seriously..." Has anyone else seen this footage? If you have, do you know if it still exists somewhere… I contacted TVOntario a while back (because they had been a great source of videos in 70’s featuring artists like EL&P, Yes, Gentle Giant and FM) and was told that all of that footage would have been on either film or 2" video tape and had "probably" been disposed of long ago.
