This issue includes word of a newly released DVD (apparently available in both 'normal' DVD (video only) and DualDisc (audio on one side, video on the other) of ELP's performance at the Isle of Wight festival. Also, some talk about 2 inch tape players (that would be needed if old master tapes of bands of ELP's era are found and need to be converted to CD, etc.). Talk about the use of a sequencer for the end of Karn Evil 9, 3rd Impression. And, of course, don't forget that Carl, Greg, and Keith are touring or will be touring soon. Check their sites for the latest tour stops. Enjoy. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... Perhaps this is 'old news' to some but I just stumbled onto this today. The 'DualDisc' appears to be scheduled for US release on April 18, 2006 by Eagle Rock Entertainment. (These are the folks who did 'Then and Now' and the 'Live at Montreaux' releases.) It looks like the DVD only (no audio side) is expected to ship a few weeks later. URL: http://www.eaglerockent.com/eaglerockUSA/media_detail.php?media_id=718 Snippet: "Continuing our releases from Oscar-winning director Murray Lerner's filming of the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival, we have Emerson Lake & Palmer's The Birth Of A Band. It was ELP's first proper live concert, their only previous gig having been a warm up in Plymouth the previous night. Playing in front of 600,000 people, at what remains the biggest festival in rock history, they became overnight stars with the press raving about their virtuosity and daring. They would go on from here to become multi-million selling artists, but this unique film is there right at the beginning. This DualDisc contains the full-length film from the festival on one side, and the full companion audio recording on the other. Track listing: 1. Pictures at an Exhibition 2. Take a Pebble 3. Rondo 4. Nutrocker" For more information, Eagle Rock Entertainment has put out an 'eCard' (Flash site) that has a preview (though mostly of preview scenes of the environment surrounding the show and some interviews that have been put in it (that appear to be from 2005). Synopsis below: My Wizard Saturday 1 April 2006 10:30-11:00 (Radio 4 FM) Investigating the phenomenon known as Prog Rock. John Aizlewood discovers what it was, and asks why it became the genre that dare not mention its name. Born out of jazz and killed off by the Punk movement, Progressive Rock spawned numerous mind-altering album sleeves and became the catalyst for stadium rock pomposity. With contributions from some of the most important progressive rock musicians, My Wizard asks why such a disparate group of bands were labelled as 'prog' when their influences incorporated styles as diverse as classical, jazz, folk and blues. Contributors include Keith Emerson from ELP; Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull; Rod Argent from The Zombies and Argent; Fish, ex-Marillion, Heather Findlay from Mostly Autumn; Hawkwind's Dave Brock and Simon Frith, Professor of Music at Edinburgh University. I only caught it by chance, but you may be able to listen at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml Thanks for all the hard work on the digest, hope this contribution helps. However, if you decide not to publish these notes, I will understand you. I just received my copy, I have watched it, trying to find the relation between the sound and the movie stills. There is no relation at all! Apparently, the creators of this DVD extended artificially the stills from the original movie Isle of Wight Festival, to give the impression of a full concert movie. The original movie DVD has a small excerpt of "Pictures" and another one of "Rondo". The video from these two excerpts is than used to match a full sound track list containg longer versions plus "Take a Pebble"! I don't know what to say. I feel myself been deceptive and I will not make more comments. The best ELP DVD is still the one we all know. Another important detail. The copy I received is not a dual disc as announced! Pedro Esquivel - Portugal [ Editor's Note: There has been a lengthy discussion of the nature of the DVD and the need to fill in sections of the audio where apparently no video exists on the Yahoo ELP-DISC group. If you're interested in this aspect of the DVD, you can get a Yahoo ID for free and read there. I have a DualDisc version sitting here on my desk. Thus, I can't comment on which copy Pedro received. Perhaps one has to be careful with seeing what you're ordering/buying to make sure you get the version you want. - John - ] =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: Steve Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2006 1:11 PM To: elp-digest Subject: RE: Cal Jam Hi John, FYI for all interested. I would have to assume that the 2 inch tapes that all of you are talking about would be from Cal Jam #1. The company that would have those tapes would be Dick Clark Produtions in Burbank. The event was produced by Concert Associates or Concerts West. According to history, the event was too big for them to handle and they asked Dick Clark Productions to come and help. Dick Clark then brought in ABC-TV to tape it for Dick Clark's In Concert show which aired on Friday nights. It was not a Kirschner thing. It would be great to get those tapes and re mix the audion in 5.1 properly and release the whole show on DVD. We are probably all dreaming. Due to the fact that most people don't give a damn about the show, but there are a few of us that do. May be someday. Steve Lehman [ Editor's Note: This is the one topic that has been a constant over all the years of the Digest. Everyone wants to see the full Cal Jam performance and/or some other full show from the Brain Salad Surgery era. I recall (and you can read it in the back issues of the Digest) that people went to great efforts to track down those tapes when Then and Now came out (with the Cal Jam audio) and that, at one point I think, all that existed were the 'as aired' tapes - not the full set. And I believe the asking price for the rights to release the video was quite high. And it should be noted that ELP doesn't own the rights to it. Those rights were held by some combination of ABC, Dick Clark, and/or the other promoters. So, we can keep hoping and dreaming that someday, the holy grail of ELP videos will surface. - John - ] --------------------------------------------- From: alastair cox Sent: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 4:01 AM To: elp-digest Subject: Refugee After looking for the Refugee cd and only finding it occasionaly on Ebay at silly prices, or as a dodgy import, I decided to do a search on Patrick Moraz. Hey all: My first contribution to the Digest, with more reports likely! Indeed, there is a rock n' roll god!! I live in Winchester, MA, a suburb of Boston, and when I saw the March version of the ELP Digest, I was thrilled to see that Carl was going to be touring the US. As I scanned down the list of tour dates, and saw that he would be in New York and even Connecticut, my mind began planning a relatively easy road trip with my son - and planning on how to convince my wife that it would be a cool thing to do! I just about plotzed on the spot when my eye caught the date of May 30th at the Regent Theater in Arlington, MA. A couple thousand (at most!) seat renovated old time movie house, all of 3 miles from my house!!! In these days of "online-ticket-sales-you're-lucky-to-get- tickets-in-the-nosebleed-seats-for-$90-each" for your favorite acts, here I was at the box office in the town next door getting Row 4 seats for myself and my family, maybe about 20 feet from the band - for about $25 a pop! Oh, can it be! So imagine nirvana when I happened upon Keith's website last weekend to see that he FINALLY would be doing the promised east coast tour of the States... And again discovering that he too was booked at the Regent Theater for one of only 9 dates in the US in June! Another "exhausting" 5 minute drive to Arlington and this time, front row seats, left side of the house. Someone pinch me!!! (Keith - please don't change your established habit of playing on stage right!!!) I'm writing to advise anyone within reasonable distance to try to catch one of these shows before the tickets evaporate. It's a great room to hear music, and intimate as intimate gets for legends like these guys. All we need now is for Greg to decide to tour and to check in with his old mates to find out what a cozy warm place this is here in Arlington. I may never see ELP as a group again, but so far, I've got the "E" and the "P". C'mon Greg! I will check in again with you all after each of the shows to deposit my 2¢ worth, but I just had to share this unbelievable luck with you all, and wish you each the same good fortune at some point in the future too! It was, in fact, done on an early Moog analog, monophonic sequencer. With these older, analog sequencers you had to program each note rather than simply play it as can be done now with digital sequencers. While touring with my own band in the summer of 1974, I met Keith's keyboard technician, Rich Walborn, who at the time was also working as a keyboard technician in Kalamazoo, MI at a music shop called the Music Factory. I had taken in my ARP 2600 for repair and noticed several photos on the wall of Rich, Keith and Bob Moog, taken at the California Jam concert. Rich mentioned that at the end of Karn Evil 9, when Keith started the sequencer and the band left the stage, Rich would be crouched behind the equipment and he would speed up the sequencer by use of a foot pedal that had been rigged up for that purpose. Thanks for keeping the digest alive! Speaking of Beyond the Beginning...I picked it up and finally had the time to muddle through it..I think it's great BUT.. I sure can't comprehend that no one kept FULL versions of these snippets of performances?!?! I can understand an entire concert not being saved, but it seems that except for a few the performances are all severely edited! By comparison, the Led Zeppelin box was thoroughly AMAZING for the footage that they had, and the fact that they substituted some bootleg footage to fill holes was rather intelligent! It would be much better if there were at least some more complete parts...just my 2 cents.... Ben --------------------------------------------- From: Jim S Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2006 9:39 PM To: ELP Digest Subject: Answers to Moog questions Answer to John Whapshott: It was indeed a sequencer. The early Moog, ARP and Buchla modulars all used step sequencers. I'm dating myself now it wasn't till the late 70's that the 1st digital sequencers were around. I used to teach electronic music in Boston, MA. You would have to set each knob to output a voltage that would in turn raise or lower the pitch. Many sequencers would have 3 rows of 8 to 12 knobs. The other could open your filters etc. It was a time consuming process but worth it at the end. I have attached a picture. [ Editor's Note: I've put this picture on the ELP Digest web site at: http://www.brain-salad.com/Graphics/Memorabilia/MoogAd1974.jpg ] Look at the top row on the Moog 3C. Get the soft synth Modular Moog Plug in it has every thing that is in the picture including the step sequencer. John said now you'd use a sequencer, and in 1973 you'd use... a sequencer! Keith has two Moog 960 sequencers in the next-to-the-top bank of his modular. Here's a link to info on the 960 module at Moog Archives: http://www.moogarchives.com/m960.htm and a photo at Moogfest showing the modules: http://www.keithemerson.com/Gallery/2004Appearances/18MayMoogFest/Photos/MAB/EmoAtMoogFest.jpg The KE9 sequence contains 24 notes. The sequencer has 3 banks of 8 control voltages. Each knob was set for a note of the phrase, and the 3 banks were played in sequence to get the 24-note passage. Then the clock rate was increased to speed up the sequence while it was playing. Smoke and bat wings are optional.
