Since it's been longer than usual between issues and since there is a lot of news to report, there are going to be 2 issues of the ELP Digest sent out over the next few days. This is Vol. 14, #4 and the next will be Vol. 16, #5. They are different. I thought many of you would prefer two shorter emails than one really long one. So, stay tuned for other news, reviews, etc. tomorrow (or by the end of the week, anyway). This issue (#4) will concentrate on the usual ELP-related news and information sharing. Issue #5 will concentrate on reviews of the current tours. So far, these are mostly Carl Palmer Band reviews since that's what I've received the most of. If you want to write a Carl Palmer Band or Keith Emerson Band review, please send it in. (And, of course, as Greg's appearances happen, reviews of those are welcome, too.) Read on... - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... Lots of new info at Keith's official site since the last Digest, including: many posts to the Tour Info page (be sure to see the band's new logo!) ..., the arrival of autographed copies of "Off The Shelf" in the Online Store ... and a new Q/A on the Ask Emo page. Although he's on tour, he took the time for getting back on all the "left over questions" from the past. Apart from his musical talents and his humour, I highly appreciate that he’s always true in his word. He replies as soon as he has the time. Emerson Lake and Palmer are captured here at the very beginning of a legendary career. Filmed at the time when the band had only just recorded their ground breaking first album, ELP had to use all of their huge individual creative talents to create a full show. That's what makes this film so special. Extensive improvisation virtuoso playing by Keith Emerson, inventive percussion from Carl Palmer and a bravura performance at the mike by the young Greg Lake make this an essential addition to the collection of any fan of the progressive rock era. Features: 1. Barbarian 2. Rondo/Bach Improvisations 3. Drum Solo 4. Nut Rocker 5. Take A Pebble 6. Knife Edge Approx run time 60 mins." In other words this seem to be the Belgium TV-special from 1971, also known as "Masters From The Vaults" - this may now be in for an official release. More like from the trash I bought this cd as the titles looked interesting and promised to be from emo's career. Well that should read from Emo's late uninspired messing around career. If you thought that Changing States was scraping the barrel, well this goes one stage further. It appears that all the "Good stuff" has already been released and all we are getting now are poor quality bits and pieces cobbled together in an effort to make a quick buck. Changing States, Bootleg series, Beyond the beginning, Isle of Wight I have been a lifetime fan, but I refuse to buy any "new" product and get ripped off again. By the way, apparently Repertoire no longer own the rights to Nice the third Nice album, so all copies now have that awful edit between Rondo 69 and She Belongs to Me (the bit where Castle manage to start SBTM over Keith's spoken "It's a thing called she belongs to me" If anyone knows how you can cock up like this can they explain it to me please? Absolutely amazing CD. Do not miss it. Track 3 is "Rio", name of my home town here in Brazil. Excellent piece. Emo writes about it: "A Brazilian flavoured tune recorded in my home studio and I had a great deal of fun playing around on the Yamaha keyboard. A friend helped me write the lyrics which I wrote phonetically. I told her what I wanted to say and she came back with the Portuguese version. The singer turned out to be Paul McCartney's cousin. It's about a guy who comes back home after a night out and his wife won't let him back in the house and all his stuff is in black bin liners. She's saying 'You can take your radio, your stereo and your dirty socks but you aren't coming home.' I went through all that. I have since played this to some Brazilian people and they didn't understand a word of it!" Well, no, no and no! I could easily understand some of the lyrics. Ok, not all of it, but I will transcribe what I could get and post it here. Cheers! - c.a.t. http://catalisando.com --------------------------------------------- From: Paul Vandersar Sent: Sunday, April 30, 2006 7:39 AM To: ELP Digest Subject: Montreaux DVD in Oz Hi all, Thank you John, for keeping the Digest alive - truly a labour of love, much appreciated by this fan who lives in a part of the world where prog rock has a dirty name. Will Australia only ever produce R 'n wannaBe's, bad white rap and AC/DC cover bands? Then I hear stuff by The Dissociatives, Evermore, George and others - and I am reassured that there's still an undercurrent of intelligent, quirky, original music flowing beneath the surface crust of VOMIT: Video Oriented Muzak Infiltrating Teenagers. Sorry about the rant - Oz Digesters, feel free to flame or agree! Anyway, this was meant to be a (belated) little note for Antipodean subscribers about the general availability of ELP's Live In Montreaux '97 DVD. It has been in major music retailers since last December, and it's well worth the price of admission. There have been a few reviews in this forum, but to summarise: Truly great sound quality. Video is high quality as well, but there's the occasional empty camera - hey Mr Director, just switch to Keith, there's always something going on with him! The guys take a couple of songs to get it together, and then they are rock solid ripping through classics like Knife Edge, Bitches Crystal and Tarkus (no Aquatarkus, sadly!), to a capacity crowd. Keith gets his share of the limelight, and despite his obvious right hand troubles, seems to be having fun. His highlights: drop-dead stride piano in Honky Tonk Train Blues; extended, emotional Hammond soloing in Tarkus; and the whole knife-in-the-keys-while-lying-under-the-organ bit is musically dubious, but very entertaining! Greg is in fine voice, apart from a few gruff moments, and the multitude of high quality camera closeups reveal that his seemingly casual approach to bass is in fact the result of his confident mastery of the instrument - a sadly underrated player (as I've said more than a few times before in this forum!) The same goes for his all too brief acoustic guitar spots: a laid-back From The Beginning, and that other song. Carl holds it all together, his power and precision not having diminished one iota. For me, his snare-dominated approach is the key to his unique style, brought to the fore in his signature drum solo. I watched him do exactly the same solo on the Asia Live in Moscow 1990 DVD, but time hasn't dulled this showstopper... just the opposite. If you're Australian, buy this DVD before they discover it's prog rock and pull it off the shelves. I recently read something about the growth of the "social internet" concept (...broadcast yourself...). One of the web sites being referred is: http://www.youtube.com In this site, there are several ELP video clips (ELP fans will be very happy...)! However, there is a excellent clip of Knife Edge that needs a special attention. As far as I know, this clip was never released: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZDw_47iKpE&search=elp This clip is a full KE version, it includes the Bach's French Suites section, and is one of the best clips I ever watched. Do you anything more about this clip? It looks like they had about 5 minutes of real video, so they cut and spliced it in as filler. I'm sorry, but stills of Emo on the L-100 during Take a Pepple just dont work at all. The interviews with Mssrs E, L and P were from the same sessions as "Beyond the Beginning". I wish I could recommend this one, but I'm afraid that the production quality actually mars the product. That said, I am looking forward to CP and KE's tours in June. They are playing 2 venues within close proximity to my area, so I will get to see each of them twice. And with Wakeman on tour as well, it should be a good June. --------------------------------------------- From: Rodrigo Werneck Sent: Thursday, May 11, 2006 9:26 PM To: elp-digest Subject: ELP-related reviews Hi John, Long time no hear... although of course I keep myself updated with the brilliant ELP Digest. I looked at my copy of "Changing States." The disc itself is embossed copyright 1995 PRS/MCPS, but the liner notes say that "some of this music was recorded in LA over the Independence Day holiday, 1989," and that "The rest of the material was recorded in Campbell CA on the occasion of the Big San Jose Earthquake of 1989." Note: there is an orchestral version of Abaddon's Bolero that features the London Philharmonic Orchestra -- this was recorded back in the Works, Vol. 1 days. The liner notes are limited to a single treatise written by the guy listed as bass and doing the production work, and this copy appears to have been manufactured in England by AMP Records, London. The discography on the Emo site (as I'm sure you know well) lists the CD as "Cream of Emerson Soup" aka "Changing States," no date for either version. Your PDF discography on brain-salad lists it as "CS" with a release date of 1989, with no mention of "Cream of Emerson Soup." Amazon UK, which usually has more Emerson stuff than the other sites, has several different entries for "Changing States," but none for "Cream of Emerson Soup." Emo's online store carries neither version. Last but not least, I did a Google search. Surprise - I should have done this first. The topic was discussed in detail in (where else?) The ELP Digest's March 6, 1995 issue. Sigh. There was also an entry on Greg's forum, but the site says the boards are down for site construction. Anyway, the Digest entry suggests that "Cream" was around before "States." So there.
