And I'm sorry. This has, I think, been the longest drought of ELP Digests since the Digest began. Perhaps I should think of it as my version of the time between Love Beach and Black Moon. Anyway, it's no excuse but I have had a very busy winter/spring with many tight deadlines at work, etc. What I've learned from this is that I think I'm (finally) going to begin to think more seriously about an idea that I've had for a year or so... Migrating the Digest to a kind of moderated blog where I enter the items I receive as they come in and send out an occasional summary and pointer to that web site to remind people of new content. I think this could be a great way to provide more timely information on the web while not forgetting that many people who subscribe to this email list like it precisely because it comes to them directly and doesn't require extra work to seek out the ELP information in the 'spare time' that none of us seem to have. (And, to let you know, one of the main reasons that the Digest got started was precisely because I didn't have time to seek out all the ELP info on rec.music.synth and the other newsgroups that existed back in the late 19080s. Anyway... There is, not surprisingly, a decent amount of news in the 5 months or so since the last Digest. In this issue, I've tried to summarize it all and only removed from my 'inbox' the messages that had a definite time frame that is now in the past. My apologies to people who sent mail for the Digest for events that we missed. Rather than even try to summarize it here, I'll just let you get started. I have to tell everyone of a collectable statue that just came out (April) of Keith. UNBELIEVEABLE! It's Keith at the keyboards in that classic pose, of him playing and turning towards the audience, during the Brian Salad Tour. Keith stands roughly 7'' tall while the Moog measures in at 12". It's made of something called poly-resin (it feels like plaster to me). With an incredible likeness of our hero. It's put out by Knucklebonz as part of it's Rock Iconz series. For a picture of it you can go to knucklebonz.com. It was a bit pricey at $175.00 but as far as I'm concerned well worth it. Of course now I can't wait for Carl & Greg to come out. Cheers, ellie =========================== Reader Commentary =========================== From: gould.paul Sent: Monday, January 01, 2007 9:19 AM To: elp-digest Subject: ELP Reunion Set-List Hi Everyone, Happy New Year. ELP touring again ? Suprise wouldn't it ? However, to contribute to the discussion, I agree with some of the position Chistopher Monahan presented in the last digest, but let's be realistic. I do not wish to sit through "The 3 faetes" since I live in Paris France, I can get this organ recital at the Notre Dame !! Unfortunately Keith has not yet made himself available to do a gig here, pity. What we (the fans) need is a pompous, bombastic and "over the top" ELP, as is their reputation (like it or loath it) 1) They should camp out for 4 or 5 nights at The Albert Hall of NIA in Brum, this will sell out and logistically be very lucrative. 2) Orchestra needed, as only Keith and ELP have successfully married Rock combo with a concert orchestra. 3) This would mean a very diverse concert of ELP and previous bands contributions such as : Karelia suite Pirates 21st Century Schiziod Man Enemy God Fanfare 4) Hoedown + medley Jeremy Bender,The Sheriff & Benny the Bouncer, Take a Pebble + any piano improvisations (with orchestra ?) 5) Greg's acoustic set (Great backlog here to chose from) 6) Do not play Tarkus or Pictures in medley ! Only full versions (Why not with the orchesrtra ?) 7) Toccata , Jerusalem ( as intro?), Changing States, Touch & Go 8) To Finish , the entire KE9 I totally agree with Christopher - ditch America/Rondo. This is not the definitive list, of course, but all this can allow a varied set each night perhaps. As Christopher mentioned , just check out Yes. Now this represents exactly what a true ELP 3 hours concert should be. Oh The Power and the Glory ! ! ! But I have my doubts anything will take place anyhow. Good job I can see The Musical Box in 2007 ! ! All the Best and Thanks to everyone for keeping this an Interesting Site! Cheers, Paul Gould --------------------------------------------- From: Simon Reay Sent: Wednesday, January 10, 2007 4:56 PM To: elp-digest Subject: Oops! Very surprised to see such a rapid and polarised response to what was actually a throwaway comment I made about Keith's jazz piano playing. I really didn't intend to hit such a 'nerve' there, but on reflection I stand by it fully. Let me start by declaring an interest, KE is my all time favourite musician, and ELP my all time favourite band, and these two facts will never change. As a long standing ELP fan (32 years) here in the UK, I observe the following about the musical consensus circa 2007; 1) Rock Music is dead as a forward moving/creatively led (i.e. progressive) force. What we are left with is indie/alternative and other mutant crap derived from punk and pub rock. These guys only get to make 1 or 2 albums anyway, and then are dumped by the consumerist venal record companies. 2) MOBO dominates (Music of Black Origin) everything. The argument is that any popular music not fundamentally based on black forms is somehow inferior. This ranges from Bee Gees/George Benson 'boy band' balladry, to hip hop/rap (today's musical R+D department but not always the finished article, as jazz and RnB was before). 3) Classic Rock/Rock History, means guitars, you know, Ozzy/Sabs wrote the book on everything; touring/stadiums, albums, leather, units shifted, attitude, 70ís golden age. So What ! Well, I think one of the tasks of this forum should be to keep the flame alive for the future generations who will one day realise they are being conned at present, and remind them that rock music can be; exciting, expertly played on the emerging technology and sound palettes of the era, possess a formidable instrumental edge, and be strongly based on Classical and European forms, whilst still quoting from jazz and R&B legacies. To do that we all need to be; 1) Objective 2) Honest 3) Open to reappraisal on what ELP/KE were actually good at, but also what were honest/fun hybrid experiments that simply don't withstand the passage of time. Concerning the feedback to my comments; Roy Henderson noted; 'His (Keiths) 'stride/jazz' piano often sounds a little stiff to me'. Roy exactly, 'Stiff' and 'Jazz Piano' are mutual exclusives. I agreed with your points on the classical/ church influences also. Peter Wilton - Emo's jazz piano (or jazz generally) is probably his strongest suit. Peter do you honestly believe this. Are you sure you're not listening to Keith Jarrett rather than Keith Emerson. Lots of people understand jazz now and you can buy all the classic recordings easily unlike in the 70's. I saw Herbie Hancock in the UK last month and what struck me was the number of young people in the audience, 15/16 year olds, they all know what real jazz piano sounds like. Can anyone name an ELP/KE 'jazz piano track' I could play them alongside Maiden Voyage or Chameleon. They would just laugh if I tried to!. A-digest-reader said 'I really wish he had said he doesn't prefer the jazz piano [ -- a valid opinion that he is certainly entitled to have -- ] rather than saying the man can't play. That's nonsense, and completely unfair. It's not even worth dignifying the remark with the long list of wonderful jazz interpretations and references that we have enjoyed from Keith over the years'. Yes, I dig the references. My favourites are the Interplay quote in Blues Variation, and the cheeky bit of Salt Peanuts in Tiger in a Spotlight, So What ! America is from West Side Story, does this mean Keith could score a successful broadway musical if he wanted to. Can you please name me one, just one, from the 'long list' of standout ELP/KE 'jazz piano' tracks or solo's please. It's not nonsense to say KE can't play jazz piano, he can't. Please don't anyone mention the variations from WBMF at this point. Anyone who can still listen to that for pleasure in 2007 needs to get out more! I bet if you quoted to Keith the last speech in Jerry Maguire 'To be honest with you, I've failed as much as I've succeeded, but I love my life, and I wish you all my kind of success' he'd say fair enough. Sorry all, I'll get off my soapbox here. Even Carl's comments in the Welcome Back video pained me where he was on about ELP being known mainly as a live band as if he was dismissing the all studio recordings. I'll leave the last word to Mr Lake. At the end of the Isle of Wight DVD he's asked how ELP will be remembered. He simply says something like 'ELP popularized classical music for a lot of young people, that's the true legacy of ELP'. Nuff Said. Greg and Keith's mums should get together and crack the lads heads together and tell them to grow up. At least it could then be called the Cracked Heads Tour 08. As many of our parents have no doubt said in the past, " I don't care who started it, finish it now, shake hands and play nicely together". Let Keith look after the music side of things, Greg the production of the album and Carl to keep them both on track. BUT, I have just got the Live at the Albert Hall DVD from HMV.. a snip at £ 5.99!!!!!!! What a great dvd. All three firing on all four. The playing is brilliant, not an error in sight, the interaction wonderful. It reminded me of how much I love(ed) ELP. I only criticise when I see sub standard stuff tarnishing the memory I have of my all time heros. Please Keith. Greg and Carl don't let your standards slip for a quick buck. It was so sad to watch the live at Montreux dvd. They all looked so stiff and grim, the joy of playing together so obviously gone. No looks of joy between any of them and the whole affair seeming to be just the "day job". Ok I have a Hammond L100 and a C3, but I am the first to admit that I am not worthy to kiss Keith's feet, but I prefer my gods intact not human. My Email to "SHOUT" records: Do you realize that we ELP fans have had "digitally remastered ELP music shoved down our throats for 2 decades? Of the SAME music? How many more do you think we will buy? Give something we have not heard yet like the long version of the man in the long black coat. -Me TWO: In regards Christopher L. Monahan's My Ultimate ELP set list for a 2008 Reunion. Very interesting EXCEPT PAPER BLOOD as an encore? You are kidding right? One it's been done and 2 it's hardly a WOW Aquatarkus ala "the Minotaur" version. or CHANGING STATES / ANOTHER FRONTIER as this was rehearsed but never performed. Toccata would be appropriate here also as this was the most amazing thing performed by Emerson in the days of analog synths. THREE: Pay ELP to perform above set. Can we get 1000 ELP fans to put up $100 bucks? How hard is that? Put it in an ESCROW account with Bank of America. Wouldn't you be willing? Then sell tickets to an additional 3000 on top of that for a re-union concert like Cream did. 3 shows in the heart of ELP territory. NY-NJ-CT. This is do-able. Can ELP Digest compile a "commit list"?. I will be the firstt to throw in 100 bucks. FOUR: Last and not least. Announcing the release of the long lost PIRATES video. Aptly named PIRATES: Revisited. I recently udated my mid 90's opus with massive amounts of new video and a new soundtrack. Be prepared. If I may quote a member of the band.... "it's f***ing brilliant" I just need someone to donate 5 gigs of FTP or webspace so I can upload video. That way ELP fans can download the best available copy /quality of the legendary (if I may say so) video. If someone says Youtube.com consider yourself banned. First off, I'm new to the digest. I'm enjoying reading the past issues. I'm a longtime fan (over 25 years) of ELP. I've seen them in concert 3 times. Still hoping to see them on solo tours. I have been actively reading Endless Enigma by Edward Macan and the ELP digest. At the same time I just happened to be viewing the DVD Real Live Roadrunning, starring Mark Knopfler and (my favorite female singer) Emmylou Harris when much to my surprise an ELP comment was made. Just before the song Done With Bonaparte, after Mark intros the band, Mark says to Richard Bennett (guitar player) - "You'll be Emerson and I'll be Lake". Just thought I would share this. Hi John, Hope all is well with you, and of course, thanks very much for the great job you do with the Digest. I wanted to share this photo of my original, hand-painted ELP Tarkus jacket with Digest readers. A friend of mine painted several different band jackets back in the late 70's, and did this one for me in 1979. I have tried to keep it in good condition over the years. I was able to meet Carl Palmer twice over the last few years, and asked him to sign it for me at one point, which he very willingly did. Keith also signed the jacket up at BB King's in NYC a couple of years ago after a show there. I think I saw you there, too. I hope to ask Greg to sign it someday when he tours the US with his band. But why I was motivated to write you today was to tell you that last night as I settled in a few minutes before 10pm to watch LOST, my daughter was watching the end of a new show called "Wedding Bells." The final few minutes of the show were at a wedding reception, and the bride's dress had caught on fire when some kind of flaming cherry dessert was being served. The song that was playing very clearly was "Fire" by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, the band with Vincent Crane that Carl Palmer was in before Atomic Rooster and ELP. When I told my daughter, "Hey, that's 'Fire' by Carl Palmer's old band from the 60's!" She just said, "Uh-huh." Kids these days Keep up the great work, John, and thanks. His wife has left him and he rents a room to a young student girl. She is going on about how he is going to be a big star and is going up to London to discuss an exhibition for his pictures - the pay off line is when she says "it must be a good omen as we were listening to that CD by that band Emerson Huntley & Palmer" For the record Huntley & Palmer are or were makers of biscuits here in England. Secondly, whilst listening to the Mark Radcliffe show on BBC Radio 2 he mentioned he had been playing with his band at a cheese festival and had gone under the name of Emmental Lake & Parmesan Not overly life changing monents but it made me smile how ELP get worked in various conversations, etc. Regards Phil Kelly --------------------------------------------- From: R Wilkins Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2007 7:50 AM To: elp-digest Subject: News and pleas There is a new Rock theme park being developed in Myrtle Beach, SC USA (http://www.hardrockpark.com/main.html) and the intro to the website uses KE 9 1st impression part 2 - Welcome back etc. Does this mean an ELP inspired ride? It is the one of an entire show from about 1970 somewhere in Belgium. It follows the band from the hotel room with an automobile ride through Brussels, I guess, to the venue and there are only about 8 songs performed. Commencing with The Barbarian and Knife Edge, a full rendition of Take a Pebble with Greg's A Dog Named Blue interlude, then I believe Nutrocker, Rondo and a finale number which I can't recall wrap up the program. It is still the best ELP video I ever saw and it pains me that my vindictive girl friend tossed it out along with ELP manuscripts I worked for months editing and a copy of Keith's autobiography. I just can't recall the title of the video, I know portions of it appear in some of the current DVDs. It was indeed a classic trio line-up and the other members, Lee Jackson (bass/vocals) and Brian Davison (drums), had also been the rhythm section for the groundbreaking prog rock vanguard, The Nice. Even though Refugee made only a solitary studio album and gigged for barely nine months, they built up a solid fan base. The word was out that they were a great live act. The subsequent split engendered an inescapable feeling of frustration for their fans. The band could, and should, have done much more. Even now new devotees marvel at the brilliance of the debut record (recently re-released on Voiceprint). Over the years there have been a few bootlegs flying about, but the quality has always been poor. Consequently, the demand for a live album has been strong. Now that demand can be met. High quality tapes of Refugee have been recently unearthed. The material has been digitally enhanced and is now available on CD. The project is fully endorsed by the band. The concert was recorded at the legendary Newcastle City Hall in 1974. Obviously most the material is culled from the studio album -- including the magnificent concept piece 'Grand Canyon Suite'. But there's also a few surprises. There are two new Refugee tracks that didn't appear on the album. They are 'One Left-Handed Peter Pan' and 'Refugee Jam'. There are also two The Nice classics. The first one is 'The Diamond Hard Blue Apples Of The Moon' and 'She Belongs To Me'. The former is a treat as The Nice never played it live. Extensive sleeve notes by Nice/ELP author Martyn Hanson compliment the package, as do the many previously unseen photos. They only produced 1 album before the keyboard player Patrick Moraz left to replace Rick Wakeman in YES. Well a live recording of Refugee has just been released from a concert recorded in 1974 at Newcastle City Hall (yes, same venue as P at an E). http://www.voiceprint.co.uk/web/Release/VP421CD/ The CD contains live recordings of the best tracks from their studio album plus a couple of 'Nice' tracks. I would say the quality is a little 'raw', but then this was recorded over 30 years ago. It is interesting to compare Moraz live playing technique with Emerson and hear the synth technology of the time. Voiceprint also have other re-released Patrick Moraz solo CDs. Phil Richards --------------------------------------------- From: ellie Sent: Tuesday, April 03, 2007 11:52 AM To: ELP-digest Subject: Dave Kilminster solo album released... Dave Kilminster has released his solo album SCARLET. It features ten tracks and fellow Keith Emerson bandmates bass player Phil Williams and drummer Pete Riley. The tracks include Static, which was premiered on tour in Japan and Europe with Keith and band in 2005 and Just Crazy, which Dave also played on tour with Keith. I should hasten to add that Keith is NOT on the album! Early reviews have been great. Fans of ELP have been wonderful to Dave in his career playing with Carl Palmer (Qango) and Keith and we thought they might like the opportunity to learn about and order the album from Dave's site: www.davekilminster.com --------------------------------------------- From: Tarkie Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2007 7:40 PM To: elp-digest Subject: The joys of ELP, music teachers, and youtube John, I have for a while now regularly searched Youtube for little snippets of ELP footage. However, I must admit, over the months I have become addicted to a certain type of footage. Yes, US school bands playing ELP! There have been some classic footage of Karn Evil 9 played by some fantastic bands, but I have hit the pinacle of my search..... The following is just awesome and I had to share it with Brain-Salad.com If Keith, Greg, or Carl see this, they should jump on a plane to Texas and go see this live!
