My apologies for the lateness of this edition. The good news is that I've heard that there are plans for Keith Emerson's online store to have some copies of the new Keith Emerson Band featuring Marc Bonilla available for sale in the near future. This will be of special interest to those of us in the US who haven't been able to get a copy since it's only been available as an import. Anyway, watch keithemerson.com for details. I'm hoping they'll be available before 'the holidays'. As a special bonus, I stumbled upon this ELP Medley performned by Keith Emerson and Marc Bonilla on a Japanese TV show. Some zany stuff and a very interesting medley! URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5R3KY6dEcA Anyway... on with this issue. Thanks for your patience. - John - ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites: Lots of news updates at keithemerson.com including info about the new album release 2008 tour info and tributes to Mitch Mitchell (of the Jimi Hendrix Experience) and Richard Wright (of Pink Floyd): http://www.keithemerson.com/News/whatsnew.html --------------------------------------------- There is a tribute to Mitch Mitchell on greglake.com and info about a new Animal Rescue Funding Appeal Website: http://www.greglake.com/newsite/newhotsheet.asp --------------------------------------------- Look for updates and tour dates at carlpalmer.com: http://www.carlpalmer.com/ Enjoy! =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== From: Martin A. Wonderful to hear new music by Keith Emerson. I'd also love to see a DVD of solo piano performances like the "Prelude To A Hope" by Keith. - Martin A. What is the reaction to the new keith Emerson band featuring Marc Bonilla album? I have only heard it via iTunes and am waiting fro the UK release. But it sounds good to me. The most consistent set in a long time and with a real sense of joi de vivre and of musicians enjoying one another's company. Will contribute further more considered thoughts in time - but for now I am just having proggy fun. And what do you make of the reissues of Pictures and BSS? --------------------------------------------- From: bjorn-are.davidsen Sent: Friday, October 31, 2008 3:41 PM To: elp-digest Subject: More in the vaults - from Record Collector There is a great interview with Keith and Marc in RC's December issue, for a page and a half. Among other interesting stuff, Keith mentions some stuff that are more interesting than others: "RC: Is there much in the ELP archives? KE: I've got loads. I've come across some really interesting bootlegs like the concert with orchestra, and wow! Trilogy in Germany. We didn't play it for very long as it was to demanding for Greg!" And "RC: Do you have any unissues pre-ELP tapes? KE: Yeah, in the vaults of Sanctuary, now Universal. They're transferring tapes of jams we did. I remember when we were in Compass Point Studios for two months - and you can imagine how much that cost us". Hopefully the lead time between interviews with Keith in RC and the actual release of the material will decrease significantly. Though I doubt it will ever take less than a year. The December issue of Record Collector has a two page interview with both Keith and Marc Bonilla. The December issue of Uncut includes a one page feature with Keith talking about albums which had a significant impact on him over the years. (Ironically, the one album he does not speak highly of is depicted in an ad at the foot of the feature in Record Collector!) The winner was, not surprisingly for ELP fans, Tarkus, although is very fascinating discovering how and why the author, J. Eric Smith, came to choose our beloved second opus as the winner. I'd like to respond to Laurie's admirable revisiting of Love Beach - I've always really enjoyed the album - perhaps part sentiment as it was the first new material as such that was released when I became a fan in late 1977. I wish to comment on Carl Palmer's contribution to the album - Laurie mentioned him being uninvolved but I'd wish people to revisit that. Firstly Palmer was using a stunning wood Gretsch kit on the album - his first alternative since the BSS and Works Steel shelled kit and in fact he went on to play a Premier steel shelled kit on Asia's first album though the IPM album used the Gretsch. I mention this as the kit sounds superb - slightly warmer than the steel kit as you'd expect. In addition for me and also I ran this by Frank Askew co author on the ELP Book, his time is some of the best he kept in ELP and subsequently in Asia. Love Beach captures him inventive and in the throes of pairing down the busy unison style that dominated his early playing. As such he isn't really locking in to a stripped down groove as many were doing at the time , but a mixture of orchestrated material - Honourable Company, All I want Is You to more basic groove, Love Beach, For You, The Gambler. There is still the trade mark run round the toms and some great tom work in general . But he also creates some great grooves Love At First Sight and The Gambler. His hi hat playing is also more distinct than previously. He plays most tracks relative straight too which had not been his usual style, only Canario featuring his trademark shuffle which had initially hooked Keith. I think when 1PM came out many were disappointed as they expected something akin to his playing on Love Beach - still I think his best time playing and also the last really extensive use of a large tom kit. Many I know loved Carls fast tom work which is now lost a little with the emphasis on the bottom of the kit and evident with his recent work with Asia. For me Palmers voice was partly obscured once he moved away from the big kit. Put on Love Beach again and hear Palmers development and creativity albeit in a less busy and obtrusive way. Described on the book wrapper as "the most gifted keyboard player of his generation", (Discuss), Wakeman was asked about the possibility of him and Keith Emerson recording together. His reply (transcribed from a tape I have) : "Well once he gets rid of his manager, yes. Keith and I are great mates. In fact, we speak quite regularly but the problem is I don't get on with his management and this is not a project (where) you can have two managers. Basically, I think it will happen at some time. It will happen away from management so we have total control over what we do. I'd like to think it will happen because it'll be a great thing to do, it'll be a fun thing to do". Can you tell me the name of the classical piece that is played at ELP's live shows while they take a bow at the end of their performance? Thanks, Tom [ Editor's Note: This question gets asked everyone once in a while and I think the best answer is the answer that ELP Digest co-founder Jim Smith provided back in 1993 (ELP Digest Vol. 03 #20 - wow! Almost 15 years ago. URL: http://www.brain-salad.com/Digest/back-issues/1993/elp-digest-03-20.txt Snippet (by Jim Smith): "[...] At the end of EVERY ELP concert I've ever seen or heard, the last minute or so of the finale from Resphighi's "Church Windows" is played, followed by the overture from Resphighi's "The Birds." In addition, before the show on the 1992 tour, they played excerpts from Resphighi's "The Fountains of Rome" and "The Pines of Rome." Recordings of all of these popular program pieces are commonly available. I strongly suspect that "The Birds" and "Church Windows" are from a Columbia Masterworks recording, but I'm not sure." Was it Modular Moog/Vocoder synthesis (like Wendy Carlos did on "Timesteps") or some tape processing of voice recordings (like 10cc on "I'm not in Love") ? Here it says it was Greg's voice multitracked with cymbals, but I'm not sure that's correct. All the best! I am sorry that he thinks he was the first but he was not. Our video is actually a remake of something we did in 1992! Someone did call his version a POS rip off of my/our work but in fairness his is actually a very good video in my opinion. JUST NOT AS GOOD AS OURS and I try to say that in all humility- it took us 16 years to get it just right. It was more like hard work than talent. Matching the lyrics to scenes was a bear. So if there are any similarities it was not us doing there rip offs. I don't recall ol' Jed sitting down with Ken Galgano and I 16 years ago throwing around ideas and concepts and then creating a video from 2 tape decks in 1992 and then getting a thumbs up from band members. I re-edited the video in 2006 after a band member had lost his copy and I was too embarrassed by the 1992 version knowing that I could have done better if I had a video editing program back then. So I sucked it up added a ton of more clips from more movies and tightened up live performances scenes so they were actually in synch with the music. So Peace DUDE be happy. You do good work but you were second. We have the history and the hard work. so I'd be careful who says who ripped off who. We did not post our video it on youtube because I would not have it cut up and I wanted people to download it in the highest quality.
