(November 16, 2009) =========================== Prelude =========================== Hi. Activities other than the July ELP concert in London are starting to come to light. Keith Emerson and Greg Lake are doing a tour in the US prior to that concert. Sounds like one of those concerts where there's storytelling and/or questions and answers incorporated into a special evening of Emerson and Lake music. Details below. More views of the seemingly off-the-wall comment reported in the last issue about Emerson's Piano Concerto #1. Some reports of videos and tribute bands. And more. Let's get going... ------------------------------ Latest News from the Official ELP sites .... The Emerson Lake & Palmer Official Website has a note about the passing of early ELP manager, Dee Anthony, and a link for joining the mailing list for the new site when it is re-launched. http://www.emersonlakepalmer.com/ --------------------------------------------- Just missed a show in Hollywood but keep up with news from Keith's site at: http://www.keithemerson.com/News/whatsnew.html --------------------------------------------- Greg's site was re-launched in time for his birthday in November - read more about it as well as upcoming concert dates at: http://www.greglake.com/news_news.html --------------------------------------------- Carl's on tour in Europe this year and more dates with Asia are planned - get details at: http://www.carlpalmer.com/index01.html Enjoy! =========================== Breaking News, Rumors, Etc. =========================== For immediate release London, January, 2010 Rock and Roll Legends Keith Emerson and Greg Lake to tour USA in an exclusive intimate evening of musical retrospective highlighting the iconic music of Emerson Lake and Palmer, the Nice and King Crimson. The two man show with keyboard legend Keith Emerson and the famed voice and guitars of Greg Lake is an intimate "unplugged" prelude to the highly anticipated reunion of Emerson Lake and Palmer at the High Voltage Festival in July, 2010 in the UK. It is unlike any show either of the two have performed before, separately or with others. The fabric of the show is the iconic music composed by Emerson and Lake throughout their careers and audiences can expect new perspectives as well as new arrangements of classic favorites as Keith and Greg relate the stories of their songs and discuss the compositions and people that influenced the celebrated music the two created with the progressive rock bands that went down in history as the super groups that began a rock and roll era: King Crimson , the Nice, and Emerson Lake and Palmer. The show is completely new - the two have never performed together in this personal setting and audiences will be treated to an emotional perspective and a rare and personal insight into the music they love during an evening they won't forget, in an intimate theatrical setting far different from the theatrics of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Special VIP ticket packages available at http://tixx1.artistarena.com/emersonlake The tour begins in April and the following dates are already booked. America (2009 Digital Remaster) If you haven't heard this CD, be prepared for some surprises. Now I haven't actually heard the CD myself, but America, taken from this new CD, is the first track on the new Charisma records Refugees anthology, which is a collection of prog rock tracks from the Charisma label over the period 1967 - 1978. And very nice it is, too. However, when America began playing, even my slightly deaf ears detected that the start at least was a different mix. But, at the end of the track, they have deleted the child's statement! I confess I was disturbed by this. My conclusion - the compilation CD should be approached with caution if you are an ELP purist. Thanks to Frank Conte for posting the link to the Times column, where the columnist somewhat flippantly and vaguely charged Emerson with plagiarism. I was intrigued. Because the column was so vague, the references to "the first side of Works" seem to mean some part of the Piano Concerto, but it's hard to say if that's what he intended. Second, which "Ondine" does he mean? I'm not familiar w/ a ballet by that name, so I looked on Wikipedia and found the following: * Ondine, ou La naļade, a ballet with music by Cesare Pugni and choreography by Jules Perrot, first produced in 1843 * Ondine (ballet), a ballet with music by Hanz Werner Henze and choreography by Frederick Ashton, first produced in 1958 for the Royal Ballet Does anyone know these pieces? Does any part of the Piano Concerto, or any other part of Works, resemble either one of these pieces? I've done similar sounds massagings especially to the BBC sessions version which is clearer to start with. There are variations between the Five Bridges album version and the BBC Sessions versions which are trivial. But I have a couple of tweaks/corrections to keefy's findings. The Jesmond Dene line should read: Won't you take a walk with me down to the Jesmond Dene? Very green. The new town hall section should read: in the evening all crimson, cream and blue That line is actually clearer on the FB version. I go back and forth between cream and green ; to be honest I think LJ sings a different color in each version, cream in FB and green in BBC Sessions. Enjoy. In response to Frank Conte's posting of the Jeremy Clarkson accusation that Emerson's Piano Concerto No. 1 is a note-for-note rip-off of "Ondine," this appears to be a blatant attention-getting fabrication of the worst sort. I have listened to both pieces and such an accusation is ridiculous... they are really nothing alike, except perhaps in mood. It is reprehensible that the Times would publish such trash. Mr. Clarkson would be better served to stick to facts as a writer - fiction is apparently NOT his forte. John D. The festival is a 10 minute walk from Mile End tube station in the East End of London. Both the Central (red line) and the District (green line) stop at this tube station. The last tube from this station will be on the Central line 23.32 (11.32pm) to Liverpool Street and all stations to Ealing Broadway and West Ruislip (change at white city). Or East to Epping 23.52 or Hainault 23.57 The Last District line will depart at 23.40 (11.40pm) to Victoria (for Gatwick) / Earls Court (change for Wimbledon) Hammersmith and all stations to Ealing Broadway. Or East to Upminster 00.24. Night bus #25 stops outside the Station every 12 minutes after the last tube, this will take you to the West End of London "Oxford Circus" If you are flying in to Heathrow take the Piccadilly line and change at Hammersmith for the District line to Mile End. For Gatwick train travel to Victoria then the District line to Mile End. Take the bus/coach from Stansted to Stratford 24/7 service then 1 stop on the Central line. From Luton take the bus to Victoria then the tube. The Ibis hotel at Stratford is just 5 minutes by bus #25 this stops outside the Hotel. Old Prog Rocker.
