The Solo, a film by Andrew Cross featuring the music of Carl Palmer, will be screened at the Cockpit Theatre in London on Thursday13th January 2011, 7pm, followed by a personal appearance by Carl Palmer including a q&a session with Andrew Cross. The event is free. This will be the first opportunity in London to see the critically acclaimed collaboration between Carl Palmer artist filmmaker Andrew Cross after its highly successful premiere at Birmingham's Ikon Eastside during the summer of 2010. During The Solo's 35 minutes duration Palmer performs five separate drumming sequences exploring an absorbing and dynamic relationship between drummer and drum kit. Each part explores different aspects of percussion and the inherent complexities within rhythm and sound. A solo snare gives way to brushes, then cymbals followed by an ostinato including hand drum and hand cymbals. The film culminates in over eleven minutes of a full drum kit solo. In stark contradiction to the fashionable maligning of the 'drum solo', the combination of Cross's rigorously minimal filmmaking and Palmer's aptitude, outstanding co-ordination and shear strength makes for compelling viewing. As critic Martin Herbert suggests, with The Solo, Cross makes Palmer "a serious proposition, not a punchline". "As Palmer builds his solo from a single snare into a full drum onslaught, Cross's close up focus and minimalist editing defiantly and almost provocatively rescues a musical genre from cultural obsolescence."
