I need the help of ELP Digest readers. I'm trying to find a clippingÊ that's either in the Melody Maker or The New Music Express. It's a cartoon of Peter Grant portrayed as a whale and he is swallowing Emerson Lake & Palmer. If you anyone has a copy or can refer me to a copy, please let me know (elptony@msn.com) Best, Tony. --------------------------------------------- From: Gary Stokes Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2011 17:39:38 +0100 To: elp-digest-request Subject: Forthcoming DVDs; new vinyl and CD releases in the UK, including Greg's solo albums Ê Hi John,Ê >>> Re your own question re. ELP at High Voltage: >>> Does anyone know the status of a DVD release No news of a release date as yet, but in the latest issue of Classic Rock's Prog Rock magazine Greg states that he is working on forthcoming releases of both this and (and this is where it gets even more exciting!) a DVD taken from last yearÕs Emerson & Lake US tour. The magazine includes a three page feature and a new i nterview with Greg focusing on his 1980s solo years, to coincide with the long awaited first ever UK release on CD of GregÕs two solo albums ÔGreg LakeÕ and ManoeuvresÕ.ÊÊ Ê The magazine (along with a few interesting book titles, some of them relating to GregÕs time with King Crimson) is available here: http://www.burningshed.com/store/books/ Ê Prog Rock magazine has full page ads for the UK reissues of the ELP core catalogue, but these do not list ÔLive At The Royal Albert HallÕ. This title is included in an ÔOriginal Album ClassicsÕ package along with ÔLive At The Isle Of WightÕ and ÔLive In PolandÕ, released today / 28 March 2010. Ê Re the Carl Palmer Drum Solos DVD announced in the last edition of the Digest: www.amazon.co.uk is showing a 13 June UK release date. Ê April Bower Stafford --------------------------------------------- Date: 4/8/11 1:58 PM From: "Jonathan Smart" To: ELP Digest Subject: ELP Live at Nassau Coliseum My copy of ÔLive at Nassau ColiseumÕ finally arrived and even the cricket World Cup final went on hold as I eagerly placed the CD in the player.ÊÊMy first thought was what an excellent job has been made of the remastering of the analogue tapes Ð on the Greg Lake songs, his voice and guitar are crisp and clear Ð probably more so than in any previous live recording IÕve heard.ÊÊ If I were being picky (heaven forfend), I was disappointed with the sound balance during Hoedown where the ribbon controller seems drowned by guitar and percussion. I hadnÕt realised that ÔWatching Over YouÕ was dedicated to GregÕs daughter (it was also my own daughterÕs favourite track when she was little and remains so) Ð it occurred to me what a wonderful legacy it is to leave her. I was particularly keen to hear the version of ÔFanfareÕ and found the jam, though good in parts, didnÕt quite live up to my expectations Ð from the versions IÕve heard so far, I think the Montreal Olympic Stadium takes some beating. Great to hear the band at such a high point in their careers Ð the chemistry I always thought was second to none. What I did wonder about was whether there was a ÔRondoÕ (normally sandwiched in the middle of Fanfare) or whether it was dropped from that set altogether (unusual, but I remember it was also dropped from the BSS tour when I saw them at the Empire Pool Wembley in 1974 Ð instead, there was a massive Hammond assault during ÔPicturesÕ). There is also a conspicuous absence of Hammond hi-jinks Ð no letting rip in ÔThe Great Gates of KievÕ or indeed at any other point. Again Ð has this been excised from the CD or did Keith play this 1978 concert without the usual fireworks? Would be intrigued to hear if anyone knows or can remember. Overall Ð a good addition to the collection, but perhaps not quite living up to the hype the marketing guys put out. Ê I don't know about all of them, but Arturia's CS-80V will emulate the classic "Fanfare" sound, complete with a beautiful growl on the modulation. Only a few GX-1 were ever built, but the mass produced CS-80 was based on the technology Yamaha first developed in the GX-1. So a CS-80 or good emulator should be able to get most if not all the GX-1 sounds you're looking for, or very close. Ê Actually, there were at least about 50 GX-1's built world-wide, some went to Australia and some stayed in Japan, with others going to high-level musicians, such as Stevie Wonder, Keith, John Paul Jones (which Keith bought), Abba, etc. Ê While not a virtual instrument, much of the GX-1's electronics came from and/or ended up within the Yamaha Electone organ line, particular the EX-1, EX-2 and EX-42 models.Ê These looked very similar to the GX-1, with 2 large keyboards, a small solo keyboard, bass pedals, knee levers, etc.Ê I used to have an EX-1, and could get very close to the solo sounds Keith used on the small keyboard, which had both touch sensitivity (pressure) and side-to-side modulation, which Keith used in the harmonica-type solo on Fanfare.Ê These Electone organs can often be found for 1/5th to 1/10th of the price of a GX-1, and they are a lot of fun to play and look at, if you have the room. An iTunes search on the song also turns up 102 versions of the song. While some of these are ELP / Greg Lake versions, a lot of them aren't. There are covers done by Sarah Brightman (of Phantom of the Opera/ Andrew Lloyd Webber fame), Celtic Angels, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with unnamed male and female singers sharing the singing duties, and many more. (ii) The version from ÔWorks Vol. 2Õ: sometimes referred to asÊa stripped down re-recording, but I am fairly certain that this was recorded before orchestra and choir were added for the better known hit single version. (iii) AnÊearly version of the 1975 recordingÊwith a different orchestral arrangement: this appears on the ELP box set 'From The Beginning'. This set is currently out of print. (iv) The 1993 recording as included, along with other newly recorded tracks, on the ÔReturn Of The ManticoreÕ box set. This set is also currently out of print. Ê As for live recordings, IÕm aware of these only: Ê (v) The ELP live box set ÔA Time And A PlaceÕ includes a version recorded at the Beacon Theater, New York, NY on November 17, 1993. Two versions from the Greg Lake Live DVD: (vi) One as recorded on the 2005 tour (vii) One filmed live at St. Bride's Church, Fleet Street, in the City of London with Jethro Tull' s Ian Anderson on flute, and the church choir. The DVD also includes footage of the song from a rehearsal (originally released onÊthe Welcome Backstage DVD). This DVD is still available in the US, butÊunfortunately is deleted in the UK. Ê Also, thereÕs another Greg Lake live versionÊrecorded at WTEN Studios, Albany, NY. December 17th, 1994, which hasn't been released but is easy to find on You Tube.
