To: arnold@reluctant.com From: John McGlynn Subject: August 31 Concert at 4th&B San Diego Date: 9/1/98 1:57 PM Hello All - Just a note to let all you know what a wonderful performance ELP gave last night in San Diego. My wife and I had a great view - 2nd row stage right, in front of Greg Lake. After a short warm-up by an acoustic group, "Venice" (not bad - kind of a Crosby, Stills & Nash/Eagles lineup), ELP came on. The set list was very similar to the opening night, except that they didn't play "Touch & Go". For completeness, the set list was as follows: (1) Crossing the Rubicon" - could this be an excerpt from the promised concept album? (2) KE9 1st impression, pt.2 (3) Hoedown w/harmonica, ribbon-controller & requisite pyrotechnics (4) The Sheriff - Keith played the solo a couple of times, saying he didn't get it quite right at first. (5) Piano Concerto, 3rd movement - it was worth it just for this (6) C'est La Vie - humorous touch with Keith mugging it up with dark glasses & beret (7) Time and a Place (8) Lucky Man - the synth bass was like a physical blow (9) Tarkus - lots of improvisation / rather jazzy; HUGE standing encore Encore - with 21st Century Schizoid Man/Fanfare/Rondo medley, complete with organ stabbing, feedback, but with Bach Toccata played on the synth on top of the midi-Grand. In all, they played for about an hour and a half. Keith & Greg were in fine form and really connected with the audience. Carl played very well, but didn't really connect ; in all fairness he looked ready to collapse from illness or exhaustion. The only negative comment I have has nothing to do with the guys - the mix seemed over amplified and boomy; probably because of the venue. 4th & B is essentially a large nightclub - last year at Humphreys By the Bay, San Diego, was vastly better sounding. Overall, they seemed in high spirits and played wonderfully; Keith made my day when he came by and shook my hand after the encore. My wife and I can't wait to see them again. After a well deserved rest, I hope they're heading for the studio - we're all anxiously awaiting the promised new concept album. Cheers, John McGlynn
