Why did ELP not give credit, on earlier albums, for classical/jazz/etc. quotations used?

At the time, it was not generally accepted in the 'Rock and Pop' world that 'classical' composers needed to be credited on their compositions or that 'classical' composers or their families held copyrights and patents on their recordings. A phone call from the widow of Bela Bartok changed his perspective on that.
